Desktop building help

Recommended Posts

Most of you probably have already seen that my gaming laptop is dead and done.

This means I will be building myself a desktop in the very near future.

Now I could go online and look up reviews for everything but honestly the best way to find out if something is good, is to ask people who use them.

So I want to know what you guys would recommend to purchase for my desktop build.

It has to be Intel based and I already have storage already. The budget is about £1500 (not including peripherals).

I want to know what parts are a must have and what parts I can save a little on (things where the difference between high end and low don't affect the build too much)

I don't have much advice to give, but remember to never skimp on a power supply. A good-quality PSU makes the a big difference, as I imagine that you'll probably want your desktop to last you a while instead of getting fried when under heavy load.

Don't worry too much on the capacity of the PSU, just overestimate and it should last you through future upgrades.

Awesome! Please post the final result once you get it all built.

I've had no experience, but all I can say is try to buy as many parts discounted as you can, if you want to save money. That way you may spend 1.5k for a 1.8k (or more) worth PC.

Reviews actually are not a bad thing to look at. If you're not going that route, then I'd suggest asking someone from the Dev team.

Tagging in a few people:

@Nick

@Xy_

@Ariistuujj

There are a lot out there, in general, who have good knowledge. I just tagged the ones I could think of off the top of my head.

@Dano told me he built his from learning on youtube. Either way, best of luck to you. Hope it comes out great!

Can I ask the reason why it has to be intel based?

ya I built mine aswell and it's pretty decent atm anyways @Ariistuujj is the dude that helped me and I'm pretty sure he will want to know why the CPU has to be intel as I think and he will most likely not understand that logic if you can start off with AMD atm I would go that way I mean server CPU for around 400 usd and the such while you will need to get ddr4 ram if you go intel I just see no reason to not get an am4 mobo and go with AMD atm as there recent CPU's are insane at such a low price and yes they do have hyperthreading so if you want an 8 core CPU with 16 threads running at 4 Ghz get the top notch shit an 1800x model for again 400 usd how ever you will need to also get a CPU cooler but it's worth it in my eyes atleast and feel free to compare the using CPUID or something like that.

also intel prices there thing which the AMD model beats in a lot of areas at 1000 usd to 1100 usd which can be found here https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117645

now here is AMD's pricing for some what of the same tech and better in some areas while being worse in a few but again every CPU is different in areas and does better and worse in some other areas.

I'm planning to purchase everything on black Friday and the following days of deals. That should bring my budget down from the 1500 which is what I planned.

I'll also will definitely post pictures as soon  as it's built!

That's the best thing about pc part picker, it will show me what power supply I should need then I can pick something a bit better.

I have been looking through reviews but opinions made by people using it in the same way I will be, are worth far more.

Dano has been recommending things to me and I do know quite a bit about building desktops, just I haven't done it in a long time and building myself one is much harder then building someone else's XD

I've had AMD and can agree there are pros but there are also cons. I had already decided which I wanted and didn't want people arguing over which one is better.

Oh so now it's £1500, anyways here's what I gave you yesterday. https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/njjY3F

I took this part list, put a Z270 motherboard on it, 480GB SSD(for fast loading gay porn ;)  ), and switched out the 1070 for a 1080. Go big or go home ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

also, fuck EU building

Easier to say 1500 and then buy it all for 1000 on black friday. Less explaining.

My Boi, what kind of games are you planning on playing or are interested. Are you a Quality Guy or a FPS Freak? What was the CPu and GPU of your old computer?

My Best advice is to ensure That you Can use DDR4 RAM. There's a Big difference on the speed you get from DDR4 and DDR3. You however have to ensure That the mother board supports DDR4 and the CPU supports the motherboard. You Can ease on the GPU since the techies say That the difference is too small to novice when you Pick between the 1000+ series

For everyone, Darkling already has hard drives and multiple SSDs lying around, so he won't be needing those. Neither will he need a new operating system as he still owns one. He also doesn't want an optical drive.

Brah, DDR3 2400 MHz is just as good as DDR4 2400 MHZ the difference is price and starting MHz. The only thing that matter is the MHz you get for your RAM.

@Darkling Try This:

GPU: 1070 Ti Releases in early NOV. Or 1070 Super Clocked or FTW versions. Or just a 1080 during Black Friday

CPU: Intel Core i5-7600K

RAM: SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GET DDR3, ITS THE FUCKING SAME AS DDR4. Only the MHz matter. Just make sure to get 16 GB with 2400 MHz+.

MOTHBOARD: Anything PCI 3.0 (Asus ROG is the good stuff)

POWER: 600 but you might need 800+ depending on what you get

There are some factors:

Do you want DDR3 or 4? (Tbh 4 isn't nearly worth it for the next year or two)

Then the CPU, just get ahold of whatever i7 you can find the cheapest from Gen4 and up.

Now that you have the socket you can hunt for a motherboard, all you have to consider there is the RAM support (clock rate, CL) and the form factor

Next comes the RAM, depending on if you chose DDR3 or 4 you gotta see what clockrate your motherboard and CPU support. I'd just go for some Corsair Vengance

Then GPU, because it all depends on your budget for now. GTX 1060 is good enough for most games, but if you want you can go for 1070 or 1080 might the budget allow it.

The rest is really just whatever the fuck you like, just make sure to get a non-stock CPU cooler and some fans in there

Now to get more to the parts:

the i7 7700K seems to be the cheapest around right now, it has a LGA 1151 socket and averages around 300 bucks. It supports DDR4-2133 to 2400, DDR3L-1333 to 1600 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-i7-7700K-QuadCore-Cache-Processor/dp/B01MXSI216/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1509442667&sr=1-1&keywords=i7+7700k

As for the motherboard, ASUS is always a good choice, so https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-Z170-Skylake-CrossFire-Motherboard/dp/B0126R2LBK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1509442610&sr=8-1&keywords=ASUS+Z170-A+ATX is fairly decent with 97 bucks, and now it looks like we have to go for DDR4

Now comes the ram, and the part why I say it isn't worth it but heck, can't avoid it now: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CMK16GX4M2A2400C14-Vengeance-Performance-Desktop/dp/B00S51XHUQ/ref=sr_1_3?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1509442757&sr=1-3&keywords=Corsair+DDR4+2400MHz For 154 bucks.

GPU: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gigabyte-Nvidia-1060-GDDR5-PCI/dp/B01K7I7M00/ref=sr_1_3?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1509442826&sr=1-3&keywords=nvidia%2Bgtx%2B1060&th=1 Not much to say, 281 bucks (Just make sure to get a case that fits the cards)

PSU: Straight forward no alternatives, Corsair Gold Certs for 71 bucks https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CP-9020077-UK-CS650M-Certified-Energy/dp/B00GN8VZ7U/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1509442979&sr=1-1&keywords=Corsair+PSU+Gold (That PSU is well enough for 24/7 usage on max power)

And the rest is up to you, slam some fans into a case and thats it.

So 903 bucks for all of this and you still have budget for case and peripherals. Hope this helped

Like you said the Mhz is what matters and hyperthreading cpu's is highly dependent on the Mhz of the ram also I was unaware till now that there is ddr3 ram that runs on 2400 Mhz anyways in ts3 atm and asked arii about it and his response was <07:02:58> "[CSGO] Ariistuujj": yeah but rarely used anyways I'm also planning on upgrading to ddr4 ram also it's possible that your mobo will not even be able to use ddr3 as that is the case with the AM4 mobos atm iirc anyways I was planning on getting ram that ran at 3200 mhz this black friday aswell as a few other parts and yes I will be going with amd.

anyways let me know if these are cross compatible with mobos as you can see here the legos don't look compatible DDR3-vs-DDR4-RAM.jpg
