Half-Life Co-Op - What is it?

Hello all!


As some of you may have noticed, we have a new server in Garry's Mod! It's called Half-Life Co-Op, and I'll be managing it. I'll try my best to answer as many questions as possible ahead of time, however, if you have any more, feel free to comment on this thread and I'll get back to you.

 

So first, before the questions - an introduction.

Half-Life Co-Op is a gamemode that allows you to play through the entirety of the original Half-Life's campaign while simultaneously being in Garry's Mod and with other players. This also allows for expansions to the game with Garry's Mod addons to make Half-Life more exciting that wouldn't normally be possible. Now, it's on it's way to GFL! I am aiming to make this server the most enjoyable possible experience you can get out of this gamemode without having to lose that classic feel of playing the actual game. Upon release, feel free to use our subforum to do things such as suggest changes to the server, apply for admin, report a player, and more. When the server eventually is released, things such as connection info, GameTracker stats, and more will be posted both on the MOTD and the Discord. (our server's Discord is being put in the GFL Official GMOD Discord) Hope to see you there!

When will the server be released?

Assuming everything goes as we have planned currently, today going into the next few days.

 

Where is the server's connection info?

Ooo I saw this one at the gamemode list I gave to Pyros! So this is the one that he said you wanted to give a try! This will definitely be different and it's been a while since any Gmod community have this type of gamemode. This will hopefully be very fun to play!

Will this server have custom content (e.g. new weapons, monsters, maps, etc.), or will it be vanilla only?

Also, are you required to mount any games (e.g. Half-Life Source) to GMOD to get it to work properly?

No, the gamemode in and of itself will be vanilla. "The gamemode" meaning the maps, gamemode, and (mostly) the weapons. Though, I am considering adding some weapons as member/donator perks that will not change the gameplay whatsoever and will rather just be "fun" weapons/SWEPs.

 

No, you will not have to mount any games. The content is available on the workshop as well as it will be downloaded automatically when joining our server, which will make mounting Half-Life: Source unnecessary.

This is sick, I tried playing Half Life with a friend using a mod, and this looks like it would be even more fun than what we did. I'll definitely check this out.

Essentially, yeah. You can even use the Sven Co-op hud on it in the configuration menu, lol. Main difference would really be the accessibility to customization and the entirety of Garry’s Mod workshop. I’m definitely going to use this to our advantage to make some changes to make it extremely fun without getting rid of the Half-Life feel.

Nice. I know in Sven Co-op you can do more than just play HL campaign like you can play custom made maps. So I'm wondering if that can done for the server as well. And while on the matter of this subject, do you think you'll be able to add opposing force or blue shift in? I know it's new and everything so I don't expect everything to be added right away.

I don’t believe custom maps are possible as the gamemode grabs the scripted events directly from Half-Life. However, I’ll ask the creator of the gamemode if Opposing Force and Blue Shift are possible. Though it probably means nothing, you are actually also able to change the hud to OF and BS themes, so I’m not sure but they may be playable. Although, the maps we use on the server are resized versions of the Half-Life maps on the GMod workshop, which means it has it set to work in specific maps. That being said, if we were to add support for the other games, it would probably need to be developed somehow. Again, I’ll ask the owner if the gamemode supports Opposing Force and Blue Shift soon.

No need to worry about that lol, it doesn’t reset for just one person’s death. Respawns are allowed in majority of the modes depending on which mode is active (they can be voted on by the player to change the mode).

This is because GFL already runs on Garry's Mod addons for their servers such as the ULX admin mod being linked to SourceBans. Also, hosting it on Garry's Mod is more for active GMod players and it allows for us to customize the server and make changes for it with Garry's Mod addons. On top of all of this, Garry's Mod has a bigger player base and allows for more people to play at once. Read the previous comments and you'll understand. GMod is made more for open communities as Sven Co-Op is built more for closed friend groups. Since we already have a GMod division here in GFL, it would make more sense for us to expand on to that then open a server for a game that we have never made use of.

Lmao, no, we’ve gone with Garry’s Mod already, and SourceBans isn’t a make or break decision. We aren’t using Sven Co-Op. It is quite literally the same thing gameplay-wise except Half-Life Co-Op has more bug fixes, better playability, along with all the other reasons I stated. It seems like you only read the first sentence of my reply. There’s no reason to use Sven Co-Op over Garry’s Mod when Half-Life Co-Op is more the good for what we’re doing.
