Dev Blog - OSRS Mobile
September 14 2017Dev Blog: OSRS Mobile
We said we'd keep you updated on the progress of Old School Mobile, and this new developer's blog represents our commitment to providing you with all the information you desire. The emphasis in this blog is on the TLI, or Top Level Interface. To catch up on other information you may have missed, visit the FAQ transcript from July's Mobile Q&A and read the first of our Mobile Dev Blogs in which we covered a number of our key considerations.
With work continuing on Old School Mobile, it’s time to start looking at the TLI (Top Level Interface). Having the game run correctly on a mobile device is by far the most important thing to perfect, but not far behind is the interface – the thing you actually use.
It’s certainly a challenge to take a very compact and button-heavy interface such as the one for Old School and create a mobile-friendly adaptation, especially when it needs to be fully functional on a 5” display! In this post, we’ll go over an example concept as well as an explanation of the thought process surrounding it.
Kicking things off is a screenshot of Old School Mobile in its current state. The buttons are small, cramped, and prone to fat-fingering. The chatbox is way too small and hard to read with no background. To a newplayer this is in no way intuitive. Basically - we need to fix this.

Here is the current UI (user interface) as described in the above section.
Firstly, we need to figure out what needs to be displayed perpetually. This includes the information and interface elements which need to be immediately available to the player at a glance. For example, the minimap is absolutely integral to the RuneScape experience and needs to always be available to the player. It isn't something that can be hidden behind a menu. With this in mind we can start to compile a list of elements that we need to have on-screen at all times:
- Minimap & compass
- World map button
- Chat filter buttons
-
Tabs:
Inventory
Stats
Combat
Spellbook
Prayers
Quests
Equipment
Settings
Social
Logout/World switcher
You may have noticed that the chatbox is missing along with the Friend & Ignore lists and Clan Chat. The chatbox is something that covers a huge area, especially on a small display and so it makes sense that it be hidden by default to keep as much screen space dedicated to the game frame as possible. With a toggleable expand button alongside the usualcoloured buttons to alert you of any messages it allows for it to be tucked away neatly when not in use; similar to clicking the chat filter buttons on desktop resizable. Whilst this button isn’t necessary, and the chat filter button functionality works fine for what we need, it isn’t exactly intuitive to use in this way which goes against what we’re aiming for with OS Mobile.
An added benefit of this tab is that we can use it as a draggable interface element to expand the chat box vertically when a secondary interface isn’t open such as the bank, quest journal or keyboard, with it shrinking back to the default size when one is open.

The next biggest challenge comes with the stone tabs that expand different windows such as the inventory and stats panel. Since we’re on a mobile device the current size of these icons is far too small to be used comfortably and accurately. An effect of this increased size is that wenow we have problems with placement. They just don’t fit properly and a solution to this is to split them into two different groups based on frequency of use.
The choice to have these high-traffic tabs placed on the right is for two reasons. Firstly, we need to be able to open these tabs whilst having windows such as the bank visible simultaneously and secondly, as a bit of a coincidence but it’s worth pointing out, 85-90% of the population are right handed and although we in no way aim to discriminate between players for whichever is their more prominent hand, this placement is ideal for the clear majority of our potential user base if general population statistics are anything to go by.

As noted earlier, there is no dedicated button for the three different social tabs (Friends, Ignore, and Clan) butinstead they are consolidated into a single menu and function like the quest tab in that you can switch between different sub-windows such as quests, achievement diaries, minigames and Kourend favour. This lets us save space, clean up clutter and generally make everything look a lot more appealing for new players.
This outlines some of our thinking behind the interface design for Old School on mobile. We welcome any and all feedback you might have. We'd urge you to re-read the sort of things we've had to take into consideration when designing the TLI, and if you feel that you have your own ground-breaking insight then present us with a mock-up. We'll be watching closely for any suggestions on how we can improve what we’ve shown in this blog post!

The chatbox is expanded above, and hidden below.

As always, we're very interested to hear what you have to say about this blog. Discuss it on our forums.

The Old School TeamFossil Island Changes + DMM
September 14 2017
This week we have a number of improvements and tweaks to last week's monumental Fossil Island release. There are also a number of Deadman changes in preparation for the beginning of the tournament, and for the Winter Season.
Fossil Island Changes
Sulliuscep mushrooms- The amount of XP gained from Sulliuscep mushrooms has increased to 90.8xp per chop
- The amount of fossils gained from Sulliuscep mushrooms has been buffed
- The amount of Sulliuscep caps gained from Sulliuscep mushrooms has been buffed
Volcanic mine- The Volcanic Mine's shop prices have been reduced by about 30%
- The amount of experience gained from the Volcanic Mine has been upped by 40%
- Meteorites in the Volcanic Mine have had their damage lowered to 15-20 from 15-30
- Meteorites are slightly less likely to fall in the Volcanic Mine depending on mine stability
- You are no longer able to join a mine that is past its preparation phase
- If multiple boulders exist in the volcanic mine, you can only mine one so far before you must move the other
- Points have been given a little more generously to those maintaining mine stability
Other Fossil Island changes- Giant seaweed, as promised, now gives 6 soda ash when burnt, and works appropriately with Superglass make
- Numulites can now be used to charge the Ancient wyvern shield.
- A spelling error has been corrected for the message which appears when examining partially completed display cases
- A new shortcut requiring level 70 Agility has been added from the fossil camp to the hardwood tree patches
- A typo which appears when tracking Herbiboars has been fixed
- The glass case for the Ancient Zygomite is now large enough to house the exhibit
- Tray the dog now exists in the fossil camp
- The Ancient wyvern shield bank placeholder has been fixed
- Varrock museum displays no longer have placeholder examine text
- The quest journal now tracks what is left to be built in the fossil camp
- Some blocking has been added to the house on the hill
- We've relocated a birdhouse to be inside of Verdant Valley to assist in getting to it via Mushtree
- A typo which appears in dialogue when speaking to Peter in the fossil camp has been fixed
- Players will no longer be able to walk on some of the water in the Fossil Island Wyvern cave
- A typo when examining calcite has been fixed
- Burnt trees on Fossil Island now yield charcoal when cut
- The rare fossilized tusk can now be stored in the fossil storage crate
- You can now check how many Herbiboars you have caught. This can be checked at any starting tracking location (as always the tracker begins at 0)
- Players can now right-click "Take-all" tools from the fossil cleaning crate
- Herbiboars will now appear on top of other players
- Fossil rates have been increased slightly from Herbiboar tracking
- Herbiboars have learned some new tracks
- Mermaids have a bowl of fish available in their shop
- The click-zones of the stairs of the task-only Wyvern cave have been improved
Note: We're aware of the minimap showing only black space when within the task-only Wyvern cave. This is associated with the above click-zone fix, and we'll be releasing a fix for this in next week's game update.

Other Changes- The Champion's Challenge scrolls have been given unique names
- Orlando Smith's surname has been capitalised in the Varrock Achievement Diary
- Geomancy now correctly displays ultracompost in compost bins

Deadman: Autumn Invitational and Winter Season
The Deadman Autumn Invitational starts on Monday 18th September at approximately 12pm UTC. We'll put the countdown until the Invitational's kick off on all of our social feeds, plus we'll be posting it right here in the news section too!The Invitational will conclude with the Final Hour, which we're incredibly excited to host live from RuneFest 2017! We'll be streaming the Final Hour live from twitch.tv/runescape at 4pm UTC. The Winter season will begin on 23rd September once the Autumn Invitational finishes.
Content Changes
In last week's blog we mentioned a host of changes which will be made for the Winter season, and this seems to have generated some confusion about what's in store for the Autumn Invitational. The content changes below will be followed by clarification as to which worlds they apply to.
- No XP loss on stats when dying unskulled (This is retained from last season). All Deadman worlds
- 50x rebuild rate on stats that have been lost on death (This is retained from last season). All Deadman worlds
- Fixing door spamming. All Deadman worlds
- When in the Wilderness the word Deadman is replaced with the Wilderness level, so it's now possible to view which level of the Wilderness you're in. All Deadman worlds
- Dropping a stack of chinchompas will cause it to appear on the ground, visible to all players. Similarly, they’re not deleted on death. All Deadman worlds. There have been requests to apply this change to the standard Old School game. We're open to doing so if it proves to be a success within Deadman
- Skulling when attacking skulled players. Tournament and Seasonal. (This is retained from last season)
- Increasing the rate of stock regeneration in some shops. Tournament and Seasonal
- Gracetime on reasonable kills outside of the Final Hour (This is retained from last season). Tournament and Seasonal
- POH pools are unavailable for 3 mins after combat in the Seasonal and Tournament. On the permanent Deadman world, this restriction is NOT applied to the house owner; they are still able to drink despite it
- Although the GE respawn is available only on Seasonal Deadman, the GE’s new Deadman chest is available on the permanent Deadman world
- Dropping a stack of chinchompas on any Deadman world will cause it to appear on the ground, visible to all players. Similarly, they’re not deleted on death on Deadman worlds. There have been requests to apply this change to the standard Old School game. We're open to doing so if it proves to be a success within Deadman
- The action on the main map will culminate north of Falador until there's around 200 players remaining. Tournament only
- When we reach 200 players, we’ll be transporting them to a new, Deadman-only archipelago, where they’ll be divided randomly between four islands. On each island, players must fight to the death until just one player remains. The surviving four players will then be brought to the final island, to engage in two 1v1 fights, and a final 1v1 fight to decide the winner. Tournament only
Remember, join us live from RuneFest for the Deadman Autumn Invitational on twitch.tv/runescape at 4pm UTC

Going to copy SwegBusters' thread, and putting this here. A lot of things in my life are coming and some of them have already happened.
First thing, ever since I've been moved to a new house, I had to help a lot of things, such as unpacked boxes left in the shed.
Second thing, my dad have recently been diagnosed with Kidney Disease at Stage 3, which makes him more sicker. So with those things going on, I may have to help more around the house.
Third thing, I've been trying to get involved in my church ministry, most likely targeting to join Technical Ministry. It's to help me with things coming around my religion. When things cool down, I will eventually come back more active.

Hi,
So, a few days ago, global emoticons were removed off Discord, and the emojis of Blob Emoji were released. I'd like to put up a couple of emoticon suggestions, which I can try to resize it to make it viewable.
- :blobpopcorn:
- :blobcheer:

That'd be all for this, meanwhile, I was bored and I ended up making two pictures of myself for Discord, and I decided to share -- which eventually some folks on public server ended up liking it. This is optional and is up to people who like

- :benpalm: or :benfacepalm:
- :bendab:
That's all.
-
I don't care. Although this will cause some players to feel upset for not considering server admins.

Funny story about this - while the camera was counting down, I initially thought it wouldn't mind me doing this, and I ended up getting this hilarious image. I'm actually going to save this and keep it.

In their never ending quest for information the curators of Varrock Museum have discovered a new island which they hope will unlock the forgotten past of Gielinor. For those who have completed the Digsite Quest and have 100 Kudos, talk to Curator Haig Halen and start your adventure.
The adventurers' guide to Fossil Island Volcanic Mine
If you like to go somewhere hot when adventuring then this is the place for you. The majestic arched caverns are a picturesque back drop for the glittering caves where you and your friends can spend your time mining fragments from the special rocks to trade in for ore. First though, make sure you have 180 Kudos and 50 mining. If you die in the mine we have someone who will retrieve your items and keep them for when you return, however any Hardcore Ironmen will lose their status.
Underwater adventures
Everyone likes to go diving and the unique reefs surrounding Fossil Island give you the opportunity to dust off that old fishbowl helmet you have sitting in the back of the closet and explore a brand new environment. Fortunately the mermaids that inhabit the area seem particularly helpful and will return you to the surface if you run out of air.
Wyverns
Of course, no adventure is complete without a death defying battle with some monsters. The curators from Varrock Museum have discovered three new breeds of wyverns which had thought to have been extinct up to this point.
Fossil Island has far too many activities to be mentioned in one guide, but here are a list of other activities you can find.
- Help the museum staff by giving them some badly needed amenities and help build their camp using your construction skill.
- Clean your fossil finds and add them to display cases in Varrock Museum's new floor.
- Craft a birdhouse trap, fill it with seeds and wait for an unsuspecting cute ball of feathers to be brutally murdered so you can collect its feathers.
- Track a new type of beast, part animal, part plant. It wanders over a wide range, and can be tricky to follow through the mushroom forest. Once you have found and stunned the beast and harvested it, let it go free to grow new herbs.
- Any left over fossils from your activities can be chemically treated in the mycellium pool and turned back into enriched bones. These can be used elsewhere on the island to gain prayer XP.
- If you're bored of chipping away at the same old tree, hunt down the sulliuscep mushroom in the dangerous tar swamp of the island. It doesn't regrow in the same place, being a mushroom it will pop up elsewhere in the swamp.
As well as the displays in the museum there are many uses for fossils around the island, however we at the museum are on the hunt for a particularly impressive fossil reconstruction and for that they will need a lot of the rarer fossils. So keep save your rare fossils until we have built the supports for a new display.
Keep sage and good luck in your adventures!
Curator Haig Halen.
In Other News - Spelling error on the Master scroll book interface has been corrected.
- Edited King Sorvott's dialogue to be consistent based on the gender of the character.
- The chance of receiving an elite clue from raids has been increased.
- The message displayed when running out of prayer and attempting to cast Bloom with the silver sickle is no longer filtered.
- An error in the dialogue during Tutorial Island has been fixed.
- Fire giants and Moss giants in the Kourend Catacombs will now drop the bones for the Rag and Bone man quest.
- A typo during the Shadow of the Storm quest has been rectified.
- A Tail of Two Cats is now listed correctly in the Varrock Museum Information Booth.
- In Blast furnace worlds, you will no longer receive trivial Smithing XP when checking the gauge as you did not earn it yourself.
- A spelling error when viewing the Varrock Museum Information booth has been corrected.
- Mudskipper flippers have had their drop rate changed from 1:128 to 1:64.

August 31 2017With Fossil Island just a week away, Varrock Museum has a handy new display to help you prepare yourself. There's also a chance for elite clues from Barbarian Assault, a prestigious Champion's Cape for those who've defeated the Champion of Champions, a much faster method of charging Iban staves and various other quality-of-life updates from the recent polls.
Kudos Info Display The staff of Varrock Museum love to award kudos to those who've helped them with their exibits, but sometimes it's hard to remember exactly which tasks you have and haven't done.
Visit the information booth on the ground floor of the museum, and use its new Check Kudos option to see what further opportunities you have for earning kudos. Remember, you'll need at least 100 kudos to travel to Fossil Island, and various features on the island itself require even more, so get your kudos up now to ensure you're not locked out next week!
The info booth will be updated again when Fossil Island arrives, guiding you to the new opportunities for earning even more kudos on the island.
Champion's Cape Leon d'Cour, the Champion of Champions, is honoured to bestow his prestigious Champion's Cape upon anyone who's defeated him and completed the Champions Challenge.
Speak to Larxus, under the Champions' Guild, to claim yours once you've defeated all 11 champions. The cape's just a cosmetic costume for now - looking mint, by the way - but players have suggested a few bonuses it could potentially have in future, and we'd be happy to give it a buff if one's wanted.
The cape can be stored in player-owned house costume rooms and mounted in the Achievement Gallery for the admiration of your guests.
Elite Clue Gamble
Commander Connad's Barbarian Assault rewards now have a 1/10 chance of including an elite treasure trail clue when you choose a high-level gamble, provided you haven't already got an elite clue at the time. It's awarded as a separate item in addition to his existing rewards.
Recharging Iban's Staff The Dark Mage of West Ardougne is offering a new service of recharging Iban staves, once you've completed Underground Pass, thus saving you from an arduous trek down the Pass itself.
He's not cheap though - recharging a standard Iban Staff costs 100k coins, and recharging the upgraded version costs 250k coins. Maybe that trip down the Underground Pass feels a bit more appealing now, eh?
Fossil Island Previews
After years of planning, and months of development, there's just a week left before Fossil Island is upon us. Keep an eye out for the preview livestreams on our official Twitch channel - there's another one coming up on Wednesday 6th Septemberat 3pm UTC.
If you missed one, past broadcasts are uploaded to our YouTube Channel and can also be found on our Twitch channel in the video section!
You've also got one final weekend to work on your entries for the Fossil Island login screen competition.
The Old School log in screen works by taking this image and mirroring it. The submission must be a .jpg, like the linked image. It must also be the same size. The flames and other window boxes will be placed on top of it in the positions they currently adopt in game, they can't be shifted down or sideways. The image is automatically mirrored.
Submissions should be sent to [email protected] by Monday 4th Sepetember and must:
- Include "log in screen" in the subject of the email
- Have your design attached as a JPG
- Include your RuneScape display name in the body of the email
The winner will be be announced with the Fossil Island game update next week. In addition to seeing their login screen in the game, the winner of the competition will also receive 12 months of RuneScape Membership!
To stimulate your creative juices, here's a few we've had so far:

Gargoyle Boss Update With all of our resources being poured into Fossil Island and Make-All over the summer, it has unfortunately meant that the Gargoyle Boss will be released later than expected. You can expect to see them circling the roof of the Morytania Slayer Tower in late September or early October.
Mod Ghost and Mod Kieren have also been working tirelessly on RuneFest, where we'll reveal all the exciting plans for next year, but they will be cracking on with the Gargoyle Slayer Boss as soon as Fossil Island is released. We'll keep you updated via our weekly Q&A's, as well as our news posts.
Wilderness Wars Round-Up At Insomnia61, on Saturday 26th August, we ran a whole new kind of competition: Wilderness Wars. 245 soldiers, hand-picked by 5 generals, duked it out in the Wilderness for victory and a chance at the $15,000 prize pool.
Out of B0aty, Knightenator, MMORPGrs, Sick Nerd, and Torvesta, the ultimate victory went to B0aty's army who took the lead after successfully defeating the Armoured Foe to unlock an armour upgrade.
Deadman Mansions The competitive gaming doesn't end with Wilderness Wars, though. With the Deadman Autumn Invitational running 17th - 23rd September, we've got something truly special planned this time in the form of Deadman Mansions!
We're putting up 10 of our best Deadman streamers in two amazing mansions to battle it out throughout the week; with daily update streams on the RuneScape Twitch channel, it's going to be crazy! You'll also be able to find juicy Deadman Mansions content throughout the week on our Snapchat (RuneScapeOS) and our Instagram (oldschool.runescape) as well as the RuneScape Directory on Twitch.
- In one house will be #TeamLUL, consisting of Alfie, Raikesy, Sick Nerd and Torvesta under the leadership of their Captain Faux.
- In the other will be #TeamCBS (Carried by Soup), consisting of Framed, Mankedupmage, MMORPGrs and Soup, led by Captain B0aty.
Our two teams will participate in intense daily challenges both inside and outside of Old School. Once completed, these challenges will award teams with points, which will reset daily. The team with the least amount of points at the end of the day will have to spin the Wheel of Forfeits and every member of the team must take part. These forfeits will be polled on Reddit, Twitter, and the RuneScape forums each day, so you can decide on the fate of the losing team!
We've also partnered with ASUS UK who are kindly providing full gaming rigs to each of our players in the mansions. Keep an eye out for some exciting competitions closer to the time...
In Other News The Mobile version of OSRS is making its way through development. We've launched some of its interface work today to let us do mobile testing outside the test environment. Most of this won't impact existing players much, but certain head-up displays in Barbarian Assault, Pest Control and Castle Wars have had components moved slightly to accommodate the forthcoming changes.
- The Barbarian Guard from the Outpost can now be contacted via the Lunar spell. This means you can toggle the automatic vial-smashing feature without having to visit him in person. Drink like a barbarian and skip the washing up!
- Cats now have a right-click Chase option for sending them to chase vermin. It might look like it'll make you chase your own cat around the game, but it doesn't. Honest.
- If you get Barrows Brothers as a Slayer boss assignment, you can now choose a total of 36, rather than the previous 35, so that you can do it via full Barrows runs.
- Teleportation jewellery now has separate bank placeholders for the fully-charged and completely depleted versions of each item.
- Karambwanji can now be fished while you have a full inventory provided there's a stack of karambwanji in it already with which they can stack.
- When you're withdrawing potions from the Nightmare Zone barrels, the doses you withdraw can now combine automatically with any matching vials already in your inventory.
- The short-cuts in the essence mine of Kourend have a more distinctive colour to help players spot them.
- Ardougne Monastery has a new open-door policy. It's their policy on serving wine at children's birthday parties that should worry you.
- When the Edgeville furnace was installed, for the Achievement Diary update, a willow tree got deleted. A new willow tree has now been procured and installed on the riverbank nearby.
- Various spelling mistakes in the special attack tooltips have been fixed.
- Random events no longer occur in Build Mode in a player-owned house due to their tendency to obstruct butlers.
- Iron players attempting to make a bond become tradeable will now be warned that they can't actually trade it anyway.
- Some pet notification messages have been unfiltered because players found them interesting.
- The Edgeville respawn point has been adjusted so that players land inside the safe zone more reliably on PvP worlds.
- Situations that clear pending damage, such as a teleport, will generally also clear pending stun effects
- The stepping stones west of the Champions' Guild now walk you off the blocking when you use them successfully.

Someone attempts to catch a fish inside the house during the flood in Texas. He successfully captured the fish.

RS3 mobile no one is hyped for this.
RS3 helped to get OSRS where they are at. I mean, I am hyped up for both RS3 and OSRS.

Already posted it in another thread. I'm hyped up for this Winter.

is actually pissing me off. My MacBook Air is BS. I ran out of storage because my system storage is taking up 108 GB out of the 120 GB i have on it.
You might have something like a photo or some unwanted programs in MacBook. Mine is 40 GB free out of 120 because I installed some video games, photos, and some utility programs.

Watch me, I'm going to pull @Kubnair and then wind up being another server manager.

August 24 2017This week sees the release of some long-requested changes to the login screen. Tooltips have been added to special attacks, and with them comes more toggles. Abyssal Sire tasks have received a quality of life update, plus our usual wide array of fixes and tweaks.
Remember/Hide Username
It's now possible to have your login username remembered between game sessions, which will be particularly beneficial to those of you who play just one account. Alongside this we have implemented to hide your username which will aid the more security conscious of you, or those who are in the public eye. Both the remember username option and the hide username option can be used concurrently. Turning off 'Hide username' will clear the username field, to prevent anyone from accidentally or deliberately trying to snoop your username.
Wilderness Wars
Above is a sneak peek of the new spectator interface developed for Wilderness Wars
Join us on Saturday 26th August 4pm BST /11am EST at twitch.tv/runescape for some Wilderness mayhem.
What is Wilderness Wars?- There are five Generals: Boaty, Knightenator, Mmorpg, Sick Nerd, and Torvesta
- Each General has been given 49 codes to use to recruit and build their own army
- There's a $15,000 prizepool to fight for: $5,000 for the last General standing and $2,500 for each confirmed General kill (4 x $2500 = $10,000)
- Two enraged bosses roam the Wilderness each offering an upgrade of either weapons or armour for the team able to kill it (view a breakdown of the upgrades here)
- Visit the Wilderness Wars page for more information about the event

In Other News- Special attack tooltips have been added. Now's the time to discover the eclectically varied nature of the names of certain special attacks! This can be found within the Advanced GFX menu, opened via the Options tab
- To accompany this we have added a toggle for the special attack tooltips, and also the prayer tooltips
- The Slayer helmet effect will now apply to the respiratory systems encountered during the fight with the Abyssal Sire
- Animated suits of armour within the Warriors' Guild will no longer retreat
- A left-click 'Place armour' option has been added to the animators in the animation room of the Warriors' Guild
- Lizardman Shaman kills now have a separate tracker (note that they will still contribute to the Lizardman tracker too)
- Brian O'Richard will now automatically give players a Mystic jewel when entering the Rogue's Den
- Some bank tables have had their click-zones improved to avoid obscuring the booths
- Olaf now takes only one piece of food during his quest, rather than blithely eating an entire stack of sweets at once
- When you pick up darts from the ground, they can now go directly into a blowpipe with matching contents even if the blowpipe is in your inventory rather than equipped
- The special attacks of the four godswords' ornate versions now show the ornate graphic of the sword during the animations
- The Blast Mine overlay now correctly highlights numbers over 450, as well as 450 itself
- Some missing punctuation has been added to dialogue with Ignisia within the Windertodt Camp

Colour or color?

RuneScape is the main reason why I type so quickly. That and Minecraft.
That's not bad.
I started this thread to jump and move on from a topic on Discord that was being discussed earlier today. I'm still curious to see which one is correct (even though both are right, I'm curious to see someone to make up an excuse for color or colour being best).
