Feedback: Starting to see good activity from you on the server. I've also gotten to know you more as a person with regards to your attitude, and how you treat others on the server. Having said this, I still require some more time to think over things. Only advice that I can give right now is to keep on trying to improve and to display to the other admins that you are a good candidate for a spot on the admin team.

  2. Just as others have mentioned already in the thread, when someone else is already leading, please try your best to NOT speak over them and lead. I understand that you are very enthusiastic when it comes to leading, and you do possess an adequate knowledge of most maps to be able to lead them, but if someone is already leading please give them a chance to lead, even if you personally feel like you are able to lead better than them.

Feedback: I don't have much to say about you because I'm overall satisfied with what you've shown me. As a player, you have A LOT of experience with the zombie escape game mode. Along side this, I've seen you help players on the server many times, with commands and other different questions that they may have had about the game mode. You are a positive person overall, and you try to remind people about the rules when there are no admins on, and even when there are admins on. With regards to your activity, you come on the server consistently and also try to put up time on the server even though you are still in school, which is really great. Additionally, the time zone that you could be posted at as an admin is pretty great because we are currently a bit understaffed there. The only things that I'd like to see you improve on really, are your communication with the admin team. (Would also be great to get a mic. hehe).

  4.   I'm actually really glad that you took the time to type out this post asking for clarification on certain things. There's no need to worry about seeming "salty" or worry about this post causing admins to dislike you, as there's no harm in asking questions about things that need to be cleared up! I'll try my best to reply to address the points that you made.  An important thing to note before continuing on with this, is that all the admins have their own standards when it comes to applicants, so what may be alright for 1 admin, may not hit the standards for the other.

Alright, so starting off with Olivka's comment on my application. Although it's impossible to look at the stats  that he's referencing on my gametracker now due to the current date, I'd like to just say that by "break of 3/4 days", Olivka did not mean that I took a literal break of 3-4 days. If you look at gametracker, you'll see that there is a 7 day section available in the historical data tab. By 3/4 days, Olivka was referencing the 3rd and 4th days in the 7 day section, where I had logged no hours at the time that he had written his reply to my application. Aside from those 2 days, I was putting up consistent playtime on the server, being on almost daily, and for hours at a time. On your game tracker, it shows that you have taken multiple breaks over the last 30 days, which are all breaks of several days. Moving onto your question about the statistics, game tracker logs every single play session that you have on the server, and adds the time accordingly. At times it can be unreliable, but this is IF and ONLY IF, a user were to go through multiple name changes in quick succession, resulting in gametracker's system being unable to keep track of the user's amount of hours. In order to confirm the reliability of gametracker's stats logged for you, I made use of HLSTATSX and pulled up your user on that system for a cross reference on time.

The difference between the two systems is that HLSTATSX will keep the data persistent for the user regardless of the amount of times that they change their name, whilst Gametracker would treat each name change as a completely different user and log the data separately. Anyways, I was able to treat that data that gametracker logged for you as reliable, since the total time on your HLSTATSX page ( https://stats.gflclan.com/hlstats.php?mode=playerinfo&player=1375492 ), matched up with the total time on your gametracker. Since it matched up, it is safe to assume that all of the data is intact and there was no need to factor in name changes. To conclude with this point, I'd like to address your question regarding game volume as a criteria and overall clarification on what admins are looking for in applicants with regards to activity and game time. To put things out there simply, admins lean towards applicants who are active. By active, I mean logging in consistent hours on the server on a daily basis. You don't need to play for 8+ hour long sessions, but it's nice to see the graph on an applicant's game tracker be full of yellow lines which rise past the 1 hour mark.

Moving onto getting to know the admin team, getting to know the admin team is one of the few "unspoken" requirements of applying for admin. This can be found on @PB-n-J's post ( https://gflclan.com/forums/topic/20302-how-to-have-your-admin-application-denied-read-this-if-applying-for-admin/ ), which happens to be PINNED in this part of the forums. Anyways, ideally, an applicant should get to know all the members of the admin team. This never really happens most of the time (Applicants get to know admins in their timzeone) as it's just an ideal situation (Was the same for me really). There is no written in stone guideline on how much admins an applicant should get to know, but it shows a lot to the admin team when an applicant actively tries to reach out to admins who don't play in the same timezone as the applicant.

Last, but not least, leadership. As I stated earlier, admins all have their own opinions and standards when it comes to grading an applicant. This also applies for the "leadership" aspect, to SOME admins, if an applicant is able to consistently lead on the server, it COULD show that they have a good knowledge of the game mode, which was stated as a quality that the admin team is looking for in @Deltacommander's (Old server manager and CSGO division leader) post ( https://gflclan.com/forums/topic/10234-server-admin-application-guideline-template-application-open/ ). Generally, it is alright if an applicant mentions that they are able to lead on their application, but to play it safe I would recommend that applicants do not focus TOO MUCH on the fact that they are able to lead, due to the fact that the responsibilities of the admin role go past the task of just leading maps.

I hope that I was able to clear things up for you in this reply, if you have any more questions, do feel free to PM the admins on discord about it! Thanks for posting this.

    Vote:   -1

Feedback: I personally feel that you aren't exactly admin material. Not going to go super indepth into why I have that opinion as Vauff's comment sums up most of what I could say. Anyways, aside from this, your activity on the server is relatively streaky. Over the last 30 days you've had about 3 spikes of gameplay sessions which almost hit up to four hours, but the rest of the days were either just about an hour, or completely inactive at all.

The vote that I give the applicant is not final, and is subject to change depending on whether the applicant displays improvements or not.

    Vote:   -1

Feedback: You haven't really put much out on the table for me to work with, with regards to forming an opinion about you as an applicant for the admin position. So my reply to this application will be shorter than my usual replies. To start things off, I've really only started to talk to you quite recently. Whenever I've been on the server with you, I've noticed that you DO try to be helpful, and you do also pay attention to the mutes that I give out, often at times asking about the reasoning behind some of the things that I do. This is great as you're able to put your money where your mouth is, since you mentioned these points in your application. From what I've seen, you're decent personality wise, and you aren't a toxic player. Aside from this, I've also seen that you are relatively known within the community. You interact with members of the community in our discord, which is great, and it seems that you've been here for awhile.

Having said this, I will now move on to why I am leaning towards a negative vote. Although you have good qualities, your activity on the server is EXTREMELY inconsistent. I took a look at your gametracker, and it seems that you really only started your activity again recently. Your activity only started at about 20-22 days ago, and even after that there was quite a bit of time where you logged no activity on the server at all. Additionally, I have heard that you can take long breaks from the game mode at times. These points are enough to make me give you a -1 for my vote. Although admins are not required to be on the server 24/7, admins are supposed to be active members of the community. If you are seriously considering becoming an admin on the server, I would advise you to take more time, and try not to rush. Build up your activity and hours on the server more!

All in all, I do see good qualities in you as a person, but I cannot give you a positive vote because of the inconsistency of your activity on the server. I'd also like to bring up an important point: Do not feel discouraged because of the vote that I've given you. I know that it doesn't feel great seeing a red -1 on your application, but rather than dwelling on that, take the time to improve yourself based on the feedback that I've given you. A -1 can easily be turned into a +1 if you show me that you are really taking my feedback into consideration and actually doing something with it.

  7. DISCLAIMER:

The vote that I give the applicant is not final, and is subject to change depending on whether the applicant displays improvements or not.

    TLDR is at the bottom.

    Vote:    Neutral leaning to +1

Feedback:  Xarn, I'll try to be brief with the points that I will cover due to the fact that I've already said these things to you before. You have a good foundation and potential to become an admin, but there are still quite a few things that you could improve on, to really display to me and the rest of the admin team that you are a great candidate for an admin position.

Firstly, I'll cover the positives about you: As you know, our community on the server can get a bit wild at times, whenever I see you on the server whilst the community is like this, I see you trying your best to work with what you have. As a normal member, all you really have is the !report function, and usage of your voice to try to discourage people from breaking the rules. You try your best to keep the peace on the server when there aren't any admins present, or even when there is an admin present, which is great! Additionally, I see you helping players on the server whenever they have questions about the game mode, or the different commands that the server has available for players to use. Both of these points are great positives for you as it shows me that you are a helpful and positive person, who is knowledgeable about the game mode, and other different aspects of the server. Finally, you are mostly on the server on the EU/Asian times, which is great because I personally feel that we could use more admins in that time frame.

Moving on to your activity on the server, I've taken the liberty of pulling up your game tracker (https://www.gametracker.com/player/Xarn/216.52.148.47:27015/), and have spent some time looking at it. The activity that you clock in is pretty good overall, so I don't have much to say about your activity aside from keep at it, and always TRY to log in some time on the server on a daily basis. I'd also like to note that, even though the amount of hours that you have spent on the server is at just about 300, I feel that you have made good progress with regards to knowledge about the game mode in that small time frame, so don't worry about that.

Now, let's talk about things that you can improve on. Before I discuss these points, I'd like to make something clear: Being an admin is NOT about leading a team. I'm only bringing this up due to the fact that you talked about leading twice in the "reasons for accepting" section of your application. Having said that, the first thing that I'd like to discuss is your interaction with the regulars of the community. Me and many other people on the server are able to associate good player skill with your name whenever we see you online, but aside from that, we don't really know much about you. One improvement that can highly improve your chances of getting your application accepted, is to make an effort to get to know the community more, and to get more involved in it. There are many ways of doing this, but I would recommend the following to make things easier for you:

    • Get more involved on GFL ZE's discord by jumping into conversations and giving people an idea of the type of person that you are, and allowing them to get to know you better.
    • Raise your activity up on the forums. The forums exist for various reasons, the two most important ones being community feedback and suggestions. If you notice anything that could be improved in the community, don't be afraid to open up a discussion on the forums. Not only does this allow you to build up a presence in the community for yourself, but it also displays to the admin team and the rest of the community that you are making an effort to improve things on the server/in the community and maximize the potential of GFL ZE.

Staying on the topic of community interaction, I would also like to see you interact with the admin team more. I understand that being on when the NA admins are online, could be difficult for you, but that's why I recommend becoming active on the discord, as basically the whole admin team makes use of the GFL ZE discord server. Don't be afraid of us!

Aside from this, I'd also like to see you stay for the less try hard maps more often, I sometimes notice that you don't really come on if a map that isn't super tryhard pops up as the next map, and I'd like to see some change in that. I'm not saying that you have to stay for every single map, but as an admin you'd have to stay for maps that you don't like because it's your responsibility to watch over the server, regardless of whether you like the current map or not.

To sum things up, I feel that you CAN pick up the admin role, you just have to improve on several things in order to convince me, and the rest of the admin team that you are really ready to step up to the plate, and become part of the admin team. I can guarantee that my vote will change to +1 if I start to see effort coming in from your side improve on the feedback that I gave you.

TLDR: Spend more time interacting with the community and the admin team (SUPER IMPORTANT), try to stay for all different kinds of maps on the server, maintain a positive attitude on the server, and continue to help out others.

Thank you all for the replies, I appreciate the feedback from all three of you! I will do my best to keep up my activity on the server, and I will also try to interact with the NA region admins more so that the rest of the team gets to know me better (I feel that the admins who are on during EU hours have a more clarified perspective of me as a member of the community and as a person due to that being my main playing time).

  9. 42 minutes ago, WarpedCakez said:

First off I want to say that I really like this write up of problems within the server. We need some of these from time to time to try to improve the server. Now with that being said...

    1. Pirates Port Royal is a shit map

The map is not balanced very well given the high hp bosses and op zombie item (if used correctly). It also attracts the most cancerous players on any "tryhard" map I've played. The mixture of the two results in poor leading and trims too occur (which I think you mentioned).

    2. The new players to zombie escape are REALLY bad

Coming from leading experience myself, you really get to learn how shitty some of these kids are with commands and general movement mechanics to Source engine games. You tell them, "On the wave you go forward" or "On the wave you hold W", and they will still end up dying. Even while helping them out I get self-muted or told to fuck off when I watch them die to stupid shit like that. Trims were then introduced back when old pirates was a thing so that players who actually would understand how the game worked survived while the cancer bad players would end up dying.

    3. Old habits die hard

For someone playing since 2015, GFL has been notorious for trimming on the map. I mentioned last point that they were introduced in the old version of pirates. Back in the day we used to wall people out of the final boat (since there was only one door to get inside) and that was allowed. So for old players like me its normal to trim a few noobs.

Not sure if this really solved anything but I just wanted to put my perspective on the map and server mentality as a whole.

Thank you for taking the time to type out your reply! I'm not super confident in my ability to reply to your post but I will try my best:

Starting off with your second point, I can understand where you're coming from. I might be too optimistic and wishful with regards to my mindset about newer players being able to listen to leaders or have a decent level of competency. But I still feel that we can "salvage" a decent amount of players from the newer player group, and get them to improve in terms of skill. Not too long ago, I was one of those newer players getting trimmed by all kinds of ZE boss attacks on a daily basis (To put things into perspective, this is my first counterstrike game ever), but now I'm decent enough to not die 70% of the time. I attribute this to the supportive players in the ZE community, and even though my progress in terms of getting a player was quite slow (still is lul) at the start, I found myself becoming less and less of a burden to the team as I encountered more helpful players on the server. I feel like if we try and give the newer players a chance, and support, you might be surprised by the amount of progress that they can make in their player skill.

Moving to the third point, I agree that old habits die hard. I completely understand how hard it is to stop doing something that you are used to doing on a regular basis. Old habits can't change entirely in leaps and bounds, but rather through small steps and consistent progress. In my opinion, the habit of trimming players could be eradicated over time on the server if being "noob friendly" was promoted more on the server, but considering that this requires actually believing that players on GFL actually give a crap about noobs, it could be said that this type of thinking about removing the the trimming of players from a server is unrealistic and unattainable due to the nature of people on the internet.

In the end, even though I'd love it if the trim mentality on port royal would disappear, realistically it probably never will. Even if it never does, it wouldn't hurt for more players to be more supportive of the anti trim mentality due to how it might help more players to become good at ZE. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Side note:
I've had some thoughts about admins being a bit more strict towards false commands on port royal, and I was wondering about why that would not work.

    Edit:
This discussion may not really go anywhere, but I enjoy discussing the server like this.

  10. DISCLAIMER:

    -

This post was mainly made to put out some thoughts that I had about the trim mentality which pops up in Port royal, and to hopefully open up a meaningful discussion on it.

If you find that any of my information regarding the map boss is wrong, please do correct me on it!

Also shoutout to the player Nathalie for really changing my mindset on this map!
    -

I'm sure that many of you are aware of the trim mentality that a majority of the regular playerbase (I am guilty of adopting this mentality quite often) on the server adopts whenever the kraken levels on port royal come up. The calls: "hug the bridge", "don't heal the team until the end", and "don't tell them about the bomb", are all too familiar to many of us. Regularly, false commanding / getting team members killed like this, is usually frowned upon on the server, but the general consensus seems to be that it is justified whenever the kraken (Both the normal Kraken and the God Kraken) levels of port royal come up. This is mainly due to how the boss HP scales with the amount of players that go into the boss fight, the scaling being more players resulting in a higher starting health for the boss, and a lower amount of players resulting in a lower amount of health for the boss. The reason that the HP scaling is a "problem" for those who want trim, is because the assumption that all of the newer players who are playing the map for the first time/new to zombie escape in general, will die early on in the boss fight to a push or pull from the kraken, resulting in a drastic lowering of the team's chance to win the bossfight.

This is where I started to find issues with the mentality. Although it is fun to watch people get trimmed from time to time, it really does not help the newer players get good or even give them a good impression of the server. I understand that a lot of players are focused on winning the map when it comes to "tryhard" maps like port royal, so most players could care less about the newer players, but rather than winning by intentionally trying to get the newer players/ players who are unfamiliar with the map killed, why don't players on the server attempt to "teach" the players the bossfight instead. If the regular players on the server attempt to help the newer players get better rather than trying to just sacrifice them for the win, I feel that the general skill level on GFL could be raised, and a more positive atmosphere could be promoted. Aside from this, the map is played on a regular basis (Almost every day I think?), so losing the map isn't as bad as compared to the effects of just making new players feel like sacrificial sheep and making them feel as if the server is for elitists only.

A counter argument that could be made is that: players can just learn if they keep dying over and over because of the same things. The problem with this is that it still supports the trim mentality, and I understand that alot of players who are regulars, are only really like this on port royal or maps which "REQUIRE" trim, but the newer players might gain the misconception that false commanding like this is the norm on the GFL ZE server, and will spread it to other maps, thus continuing the cycle of negative experiences for other players.

All in all,  I might be super wrong on alot of things and just plain stupid, but I just feel that players shouldn't really support the trim mentality on pirates. There's not much to gain from it aside from your daily screenshot of winning port royal. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

     STEAM_0:1:90551587

    Age:

    18

    Server playtime:

    247 hours (https://stats.gflclan.com/hlstats.php?mode=playerinfo&player=2472689)

Time you can be on & Timezone:

    GMT+0400 (AST)

    • Weekdays (Sunday - Thursday): Usually during the weekdays, I should be available for about 2-3 hours on the server around the time range of 6PM - 12AM (GMT+ 0400/AST). I may even be available outside of the range given, should I have no assignments/things to work on.
    • Weekend (Friday - Saturday): During the weekends, I'll be free for most of my time during weekend days. I should be able to contribute more time on the server during these days, depending on whether or not my family chooses to conduct an outing/trip on the weekend. If I were to put a range out there I would say, 2PM-2AM  (GMT+ 0400/AST).

Why do you want to become an admin?:

I want to become an admin because I want to be able to contribute more with regards to keeping the toxicity levels in the community as low as possible. There are many times where I feel frustrated because a random casual user is able to antagonize the rest of the server / encourage a toxic atmosphere, whilst the admins are offline. Although some people may find that small cases like these are irrelevant, I feel like it paints the server in a wrong way for any casuals or newcomers on the server at the time. In the end, the main goal for a server is to retain it's current playerbase and also gain new regulars to add to the playerbase, and this is what I would like to help out with by making sure that all players on the GFL ZE server experience a positive time playing on the server.

    Reason for accepting:

    • Although the amount of time that I have spent playing ZE is on the lower end of the spectrum as compared to the other regulars on the server, I am able to pick things up quickly.
    • Having said that, although the ability to lead is not a deciding factor for admin applications, I would like to mention that I am able to lead on maps when necessary.
    • I  ENJOY playing on both casual and tryhard maps. I find ZE fun in general, so there is no need to worry about me being on for only tryhard maps.
    • I offer help and advice to new players on the server regularly, even when not asked directly. If players find that they are having difficulty with a part of the level that I am familiar with, I am quick to offer my assistance via the form of tips, and if players find that have questions regarding other things aside from the zombie escape game mode itself (commands, events, general server questions), I am also quick to offer my aid to them.
    • I am able to balance my "fun" side, and my "serious" side. There are times on the server where I have had PotatoAim (Youtuber who covers GFL alot) video worthy moments with other players and admins, and there are times where I encourage players to avoid contributing too much to the more cancerous aspects of the server.
    • I am familiar with the rule set of GFL, and try my best to encourage other players to listen to it when there are no admins present on the server.
