  1. I recognize you.  Not sure if this is a welcome back or a hello.  I think this thread will be better received in Member Activity and so I will move it there :) welcome back

  2. I think you'd really like the book "Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking.  I've seen a lot of evidence first hand that science works even the really strange stuff like quantum mechanics where they say things can be both a particle and wave, and talks about time relativity.  Something that pops up on my unreliable news sources very often is about the universe is expanding.  What makes this really interesting is that it's like showing up to a crime scene and looking at the ballistics; the detectives look at who fired the weapon and where the bullet ended up, etc.  I've overly simplified it, but the university is like that too: They suspect pieces of it all came from one spot something so tight and small its volume was zero at one point (infinite density) and now it is pushing outwards... if they could reverse engineer it then they might be able to tell us more about our origins and where it all began at least from a measurable moment (everything before the big bang is apparently irrelevant).  Stephen Hawking does mention the idea of it possibly slinging back and start shrinking back to its origins, which I'm not sure if that would be a problem.

I'm not sure about the fabric and wave thing.  That sounds like science fiction :P I don't remember where that came from or maybe it was from a movie.

  3. Is jump stats still a death sentence for folks?

I'm not sure what's going on I'm just curious.  I think this topic looks more on topic could probably do well in general if there's anything more to talk about.

  4. 1 hour ago, Random Noise said:

The drums and effects are all samples that I did not make, but other than that, I make the entire thing from scratch.

That's really incredible.  So many talented people in the community.  Great job!

  5. I'm not against forum moderators becoming capable of the role.

I am against consolidating or removing the opportunity for others.  Some things I've suggested in the past and still stand by is that I would like Server Admins+ to be able to do it.  For starters: It's a low-risk opportunity like you said "who cares" regardless of circumstances I agree with that and feel like if Server Admins are trusted to make bans, then they should be able to decide on accepting people for perks in the server they watch over.

The other thing that Ben brought up is the interaction.  I hate how member acceptor feels like such a process here almost like going to the DMV for your driver license and waiting for people to approve of things.  I would rather change its tone to something like a "hook up".  Someone joins the server and they're curious about all these subtle differences members have...  the server admin can engage with the player and "hook them up".  "Check out our forums and put in the application...  I'll hook you up!"  I feel like this will be far more effective in securing people into the community; it also gets them familiar with someone who's already in the in (the server admin).

Last thing is I feel like these positions even if they are minor the people in them are more invested into the community and if they haven't had a role before it's a great pathway / first stepping stone into leadership roles.

I personally think too few people are capable of it and it would be better if we had a lot more people involved with it.  I don't even know how people should be applying for this role and so I think or feel like it would be better if we could figure out how to open things up so that more people can do it.

  6. The daily threads strike again!  That's okay.  I love it.  Thanks for making it happen.  I think somewhere between 2016-2017 was the last time I had ice cream too... when in Rome (literally)... it may have been my last sugary treat a small cup and the cahier joked about its size.  I would say if it were limited to traditional flavours I'd go for chocolate, but I use to really like a pistachio one at a gelato place in San Diego / La Jolla called Bobboi.  I said the name because I believe it's a popular travel destination and I don't live there anymore.

After all that... I committed myself not eating obvious source of sugary treats.  I follow a very strict diet although I do not deny that I've had all of this stuff before (long ago); people are more annoyed about me not eating candy and sweets than they are about me being a vegetarian lol.

  7. Hey, I'm going to move this one to the suggestions to see if it can catch more attention.

I personally felt removing the emotes were a little rushed (here's the thread), but not sure what of discussions and support it had behind the scenes maybe it was part of the plan all along.  A lot of mixed feelings and would love to meet in the gray area so that we can try our best to make everyone happy.

Something I would like to do it that I feel like forums doesn't have enough fling for supporters and VIP.  I think it could make a nice feature for supporters/VIP if they could have 1-2 more (positive) reactions compared to typical players.  I think like by itself is good enough just a basic feature; not every forum even has reactions at all so I think people are getting more than enough to say something.  I feel like all reactions should affect reputation too.

I've also heard that we now have a limit on the number of positive reactions.  I don't know that number.  I think as another nice gesture to re-adding the emotes should it be possible for groups is make it number of reactions per so that it increases the number of things they can like should they want to take advantage of that... leaving it off of supporter/VIP reduces the chance that someone will abuse the reps because money is involved.

Negative reactions I've seen mixed feelings at so many different communities.  Generally...  removing (potentially) negative reactions largely benefit the community because people would take subtle jabs at each other that would be hard for outsiders to understand... before you know it people are blowing up at each other, and it looks like it came out of nowhere.  I think they would only be acceptable on applications as a type of +1 or -1, but worry that too many people would get lazy and make their +1 or -1 without saying anything.  For that reason: I would say no negative reactions.

  8. Hey, just wanted to let you know that a comment is hidden in the thread and so were the responses to it.  It wasn't against the rules we're not handing out warnings just that they were seemingly provoking (without context) and kind of spammy.

Really appreciate heartfelt threads like this sharing your perspective and reasons.  It's very valuable for the community and also prospective admins- a lot of people risk taking bigger bites than they can chew, and often choke.  Being able to step down is usually a very good gesture... great to pass on the torch and share you story, and we all just want to have fun.  Thanks a lot!

  9. I don't know if it can be done on these forums, but I've seen in another community and a game something that seemed to work well:  They ease up on their rules, they allow the filter, and users can turn on or off the filter as they would like.  The filter doesn't have to meant as a way to micromanage and enforce; it could be used in a way that allows people to see and do what they want.

The dream for me would be all users could join the forums with a default set of words in their filter; however: They can setup their own filters.  You don't like a certain word?  You don't have to put up with it if you don't want to.  The result of this is that people who want to use some occasional bad words could curse and less likely cause unwanted harm.  The main people who get in trouble are the ones who use the really bad words or break multiple rules (such as spamming it), or the ones who purposely try to get around the filters by not using the common spelling.  Maybe the even better or more fun is if we can use spoilers like discord where the words could be used and if you really want to see it... click it.

Let's just say for example User A wants to say an offensive word "salad", and User B has the filter on; User C doesn't care and it's not in their own list of filtered words or they've removed salad from the default list.

User A posts: I think salad is disgusting.

User B sees: I think ***** is disgusting.  (maybe a click is available if they really want to see it or change their mind just like spoilers on discord)

User C sees: I think salad is disgusting.

Let's say that "salad" is a common bad word that everyone knows.

User A posts: I think slad is disgusting.

Now the filter doesn't work and the person clearly skirted around it.  They're at risk of getting in trouble.  Typo?  Their responsibility or they should edit it quickly if they can.

  10. What do you guys think of censor or word replacements on severely bad words (ie. racial slurs)?  Would something being implemented upset you?

I don't make the decisions here and can't say what would happen, but curious about your thoughts.  I personally think a filter would be pretty nice especially if I'm browsing on my phone and someone looks over my shoulder... of course!... just as someone has dropped a racial slur that I had nothing to do with.  Just my luck.  I don't use racial slurs and so I've got nothing to lose from it.

I think the other counter argument is where would we draw the line for severe or could this be a pathway for overly censoring words?

What would we do with people who count or abuse the censor say for instances a replaced word "You are a damn lamp!" (lamp replaced a word).  Now everything we something like lamp or [censored] we're already going to know what the person was trying to say.  One time slip up. Okay?  Lamp isn't against the rules yet ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°), but what about someone who always uses it and you can pick it up from their context?  Would it be wrong to enforce?

  11. I want a standing desk too, but I still have the same one I got from my friend before he moved far away... about 15 years ago.  It's a pretty good desk and lots of sentimental value.

I always look forward too all the creative gifts my fiance gives me.  The first year she gave ma calendar of us during the first few months we met; then the next year I got a swimsuit calendar of her :) she also makes a lot of little things and artwork, and I really like it especially because we're home all day.  She already gave me advanced notice on the gifts that'll be delivered a little bit late, but it's on the way... our first child 😍🥰 I am super stoked.

Something that could be bought is I've been interested in a telescope.  We didn't have one during NEOWISE comet and I could not see it with my naked eye.  There are a lot of really neat astronomical events I feel like having a telescope would really help amplify that and we could just enjoy sometime on our balcony.

Something tacky that we want it's kind of expensive, but those dyson fans are super cool (wow the pun works perfectly!)

  12. I don't know if the plan is to make an official announcement or not.  I hope so, but for the mean time...

I wanted to keep you all in the loop and let you know that 3 new forum moderator candidates have been selected.  There were a lot of good candidates who were denied because we did not want the applications to linger for months.  They can always apply again in the future.  The selection was made by a group of 5 of us (kind of 6 as another person was present) and the discussions covered so many different angles and ideas.  We're all confident they will do a great job.  Congratulations!

(You can see the list of moderators here: https://gflclan.com/forums/topic/66413-moderation-team-list/ at the time of this posting one of the three people are not listed yet there's a process/flow before they get the permissions and title)

  13. I agree with Bae.  Member Activity is more about the people and not the servers.  A bit cringe to put it in General, but it's not off-topic.  Maybe you guys can discuss ideas on what went wrong, how to save these server if at all possible, or lessons learned so that it doesn't happen to future servers.  Example above is like it needed a developer were there just not a plugins not working or a bunch of bugs?

By moving it I'm not saying there was wrong doing although please try to stay in the right categories so all the threads have their best shot at proper discussions or go for off-topic if there's really nothing to talk about :(

Have worked on a difficult server so I can sympathize.

    edit:

Extra cringe that I must have accidentally left the link in the old category.  Yikes!  Did not mean to do that.

  14. Roles like Trusted+ don't need anymore flair and are often overly glorified... it would not benefit the general community and might even make them unnecessarily resent their leaders a little bit with jealousy.  I think an example of this...  I felt the hall of fame badge was not well-received.  People may have spoke well of it during the announcement, but you don't see it going out to anyone else and I would bet that a lot of people have already forgotten about its existence (I don't think it does).

It would be insane if everyone and their mom were getting these banners.  I think you recognized that, but just went in the direction I wouldn't have aimed for.  I think the better way would be to make it VIP/donator and possibly limit it that way.  Where I'm getting stuck is how to remove it from their account after it expires (could something like that be automated if the idea is even at all possible?).

I know so far as adding it to the account if it's possible, that we could make it some type of form or thread that a Staff member can verify and then add it to their account.  The other part about making it VIP/supporter is that it feels like they have no perks on the forums, and so this would be a nice gesture towards their donation.  I'm open to including Teams such as Writers, Event Coordinators, Social Media, Developers and Server Managers (personally I'm okay if I were left out although it wouldn't be fair for me to speak for the other Moderators including incoming ones)...  sorry but I think Server Admin is pushing it they probably benefit from free-ish Support/VIP on their servers (wouldn't exclude them from donating too though)...  so long as the others can get it first, then I'm okay afterwards if Staff/Trusted+ would like to advertise the perks on their accounts too.
