  1. My area has been extremely bad.  Just today when I went to go pick up Chipotle that normally let 2 customers into the store now lock the doors...  the person takes your order at the door... goes to the food lineup and orders it from the coworker for you...  then comes back and takes your card... pays with your card... then comes back.  I ordered something and they had forgotten it so they had to do it again.  I thought it was a very odd process, but I'm okay with sacrifice to minimize risks.

I live in a very expensive area.  One of the streets it's just an entire lengthy street of homeless people living in tents, and there is a lot of garbage and junk all over the side of the road.  I see police officers visiting it almost everyday and about a month or two ago someone must have been killed there because they were asking if people could speak up if they witnessed anything (not sure if murder or hit and run).  I live in one of the cheaper apartments it's $3000 USD/mo at the cost of living a little bit further away... the people in the apartments right along that street full of homeless people the rent was easily about $3600-4000 USD/mo when we were first looking at the beginning of the pandemic although it has dropped a little bit.  I'll see if I can take a picture of it later tonight.

The state is often more liberal, but we do still have a lot of people who think the virus is exaggerated or a hoax; a lot more people even if they do believe it they don't wear their masks properly and are not considerate of social distancing.  If there's a line... right behind you less than an inch away with their COVID breath tornado-ing around you is where they should be about to do mouth to mouth CPR on me if I don't ask them to give me some space.  I've noticed the most vulnerable and feeble people hobble even closer towards you and don't get a clue when I start coughing aggressively to scare them.

  2. I just got my first smartphone at the end of December last year (2019).  It was an iPhone 11.  I like it so far.  I've seen friends and family struggle with both phones I would say iPhone and Note always rank high.

I chose the iPhone because of Facetime.  My girlfriend wanted me to Facetime while I'm taking breaks at work prior to the pandemic, and we used it often; sometimes we still use it when I go out to pick up food or drinks.

I personally like it and my battery lasts a long time.  iPhone 11 doesn't support 5G, but I do live in an area where there are a few 5G spots.  My twin downloaded 4 entire movies in seconds on 5G, and so it's insanely fast.

I feel like Android is not as good lasting quality, but you can be more capable/flexible with it and it's a low cost alternative.  I don't come across as many people with old android phones, but I do see a lot of people with older iPhones.  People upgrading... seems to me they are just Apple fans, but nothing wrong with their old phone forcing them upgrade.  I personally think from technical perspectives, that the older iPhones are better quality.  The reason for this is because the addition of features come at a price they are willing to pay (such as reducing the size of the battery and so iPhone 12 users will notice their battery doesn't last as long as the 11).  I think with Android it is more often the case some problem that requires upgrading, but no complaints because it was cheap and so is the new phone.  I also agree I feel like in terms of features Apple is usually late or advertises features that have already been around for a while.

I witnessed something a few weeks ago when I went hiking.  My friend's girlfriend she just got an iPhone 12 days before the hike.  While she was trying to hike up some of the rocks her tiny pocket decided it didn't want to hold her phone anymore.  It slid down the rocks and right into the creek that was near the end of a (bigger) waterfall.  Seeing an iPhone submerged in clear water even wedged a little bit of dirt because the fall was so far was really just something...  Oh no?!!  I thought that phone was a goner.  They were like "Gosh I hope the screen didn't crack!"  Are you kidding me?  It's in the water.  Anyhoo her boyfriend went in the water a little bit and grabbed the phone.  They shook it off and the screen was fine... so was the phone.  No big deal.  🤪  I was very impressed.

Something about the angle or the perspective of these pictures don't make it look that impressive, but she dropped it on the way up to this small waterfall thing

  3. Just wanted to add that my girlfriend/fiancé participated in this.  Sent here the link.  She thought it was fun and also wants a Terraria server.  I skipped the subbed or dubbed question because I have no idea what that is... she said there needs to be a third option "depends on the anime" 😅 babe??!!

  4. Mine showed engaged instead of option 4.  Interesting.  My fiancé and I plan to marry soon :) I still refer to her as my girlfriend often due to habit, but it changes nothing regarding those plans.  Great job, Toxic and to everyone else who contributed.  These are always a lot of fun and I enjoy seeing how diverse our community is (except in that political compass thread seems like almost all of us are libertarian-left!)

  5. Do you guys accept monopoly money ;) ?

Seriously speaking, though, I've heard a lot of people ask about some positions literally getting paid for their roles.  Personally: I've always been a supporter, but I can see how (very) difficult it would be to implement something like that.  It's going to take a lot of work to get there because it's not a simple checkbox and just giving money or a paycheck.  I'm not sure if I'm remembering right, but GFL might be considered an official non-profit?  I know having formerly been a contractor myself at a place there are a lot of rules and my taxes were also very frustrating.

I had this money thing in mind when making this suggestion.  I felt like a suggestion like this is very very very advantageous for people who are in roles.  For example: Regular members can host events as they would like (and certainly participate in them), but you're more likely going to see it from event team members; therefore team members are more likely to earn points/benefit from this even though it's fair game for everyone.  I was hoping the idea could be a kind of proof of concept that stages the pathway for bigger and more aggressive ideas.  They might not get paid directly, but they have a chance to receive something that has some type of value.

  6. I wouldn't want to limit this to forums.  I would want this to include all sorts of activity including Discord, events, and contributions such as graphics and developing.  It's activity incentive not just forum incentive ;) hopefully StoreTM becomes a reality thanks to Liloz but I'd love to continue discussing it in anticipation or to see if we can get a thread version of it started while it's in the works (I'm not capable of giving out free supporter/VIP on my own without blessings).  I made the font big because that's the most important part of this response, but I might go off on a tangent here sorry if I take you all around the world 🤪

I will make a few comments about the forums because it has been a little shaky in my opinion.  Great thing about forums is people don't have to hover it all day to spark its activity.  You could easily visit the forums and post 2-3 times per day, which isn't a lot, and you would get up to 100 posts in a month.  If you kept up at it, then up to 1000 per year.  If nobody is posting anything just lurking then yes 2-3 posts seems like a lot.  If I post something... you respond... then I respond... they respond... I could go to work and respond later tonight...  they respond tomorrow... lalala, then 2-3 very legitimate posts is a cinch and we can have some interesting discussions.  If I were saying 2-3 posts back in 2014-2105 people would be thinking this thread is a joke why do we need more people to post, but now asking for 2-3 posts is like "How do you want me to spam?" because it looks so unacheivable.

I don't think detailed explanation as to why forum activity is good?  I mean an example is that Discord is mostly active chat meaning that if I wanted to talk to someone who is almost never online at the same time as me, then that's going to be very frustrating compared to the forums without extra coordination; this is especially true for a large group discussion (of course back and forth on DM with a few people is a piece of cake).  If I were to dabble on ideas and want some feedback I might discuss some ideas that exclude people who are not online at the same time as me... this is probably why we have some updates and promotions people are very polarized about it because an inner circle on Discord thinks that everyone agrees with it and it looks like a great idea, but people who not in the inner circle or online at the same time are going to be completely shock.

Another thing too is the sentiment of the forums, but not just from wanting it to be active.  I believe that people are more likely to invest more or care more about their posts that they make compared to a passive comment on Discord.  It's not that everybody does or that they have to do it, but I do think people really think a lot more about before posting.  I wouldn't be surprised if some people put more effort into than their classroom essays that likely have a larger impact on their life than here (I might be guilty of this yikes).

  7. I like the StoreTM thing Liloz brought up.  I think that sounds pretty good.  Is it hard to setup / will take a while or do you think we can gather support to start something by thread?  Thanks for sharing that!

To do this, we'd need to either transfer to a new rewards system entirely (...I don't know if I have that in me) or use two at once (oh god...).

Seems like a lot of work for very little reward. I don't personally have the time to work on this as I'm shifting full focus to the 4.5 transition for the forseeable future (Invision Community released a large update from version 4.4 to 4.5 and everything custom on the Forum breaks because of the update (so... basically everything, lol))... and sadly no other mr Forum man exists. If the graphics team in the interim wants to pick this up and create custom reward graphics for it and people as a community want to flesh out what exactly to include in the system... go for it. I'm not against this idea, just don't expect it to be implemented any time soon.

Keep in mind the following thread too:

With only 2 people on there (I think) I don't think it does hold a lot of weight; I also don't think the team requires heavy activity on the forums, and so they're probably not commenting on threads like these too often :(

Oh, haha. I'm kinda surprised that you would jump to this dismissive claim honestly. @Serenity and @Dragoon are both extremely active when it comes to the GFL forums. I can guarantee that every time you click on their forums profile, the "last visited" forum time would be within the hours. Including myself. I'm sure they had their own reasons to why they hadn't responded beforehand... maybe waiting for all the converses to fly in before jumping in themselves? For me, I saw this forum thread within minutes of it being submitted. Not only was I relatively new to being the leader, but this also relates to the first sentence I implied on this response.

Thanks!  Great discussion!  While we're making suggestions for the writer team...  did you want to add a forum requirement?  I was talking about the requirement and not the persons.  I think the people on the team are great.  I personally don't think we need a forum requirement for the team, but felt like I must have misunderstood something from the requirements when I made my dismissive claim?  It might also help address dominics concerns about the activity of the team?  What do you guys think?

    Quote

    1.  - Be nothing but a positive influence towards the other members in the community. Absolutely no toxicity or insulting remark releasing on anyone, regardless of the circumstance.

    2.  - Be more than willing to help us build up to any future Newspaper submissions. This is more than expected due to this being the main labor when being a Writer. Just wanted to make this very clear and an option to refer to if it ever became an issue. But of course, If you are asked to pick an announcement topic to write about, I await for you to do so.

    3. - I expect you be willing to participate in any writing requests that may be pitched our way. Don't fret if someone happens to claim the request before you, but just remember that it should always be prominent for you to be amenable about helping others when they seek for help in regards to writing. :))

    4.  - Be interactive with the writing discussion channels. I & we want all the opportunities to get to know you more and better. Any severe lack of activity in the writing chats and/or being unresponsive to pings after a reasonable amount of time may result into a DM from me or a demotion. We want you to stay active and keep us as a prime concern.

    5.  - Be completely professional, leave all drama-related issues apart from our society. We want nothing but sophisticated and good moral objectives when it comes to your occupation with us. For example, if you have "beef" with another work-member, we suggest that you refrain from causing arguments in any internal or global chat and leave all passive-aggressive remarks out of context. If you have a personal issue that you need to sort out, DMs are always an option. :))

    6. - You are not to bring any sort of bias intentions into our community. You should have a complete open-mind and be ready to fluctuate your communication style to the different personalities that you'll come across when interacting with the channels- but mostly focus on being honest and courteous when replying to people's applications. Overall, bias personalities are strictly forbidden in any way, shape, or form. :DD

    7. - You must find the time to drop a your vote but also followed by a valid reason on why you selected that vote.(-1 or +1 ) on every application that's up for discussion.

  9. We could try it without forum features at first maybe a trial 1 or 2 months just do it as a thread and have someone manual update the thread.  I've seen it done and working well.  The thread can describe how to earn points and the OP or moderators could verify and update the thread.  Since it's not raining 100's of posts and events everyday it wouldn't be terribly hard to maintain and try out for a few months if the community was interested and leadership was willing to support it (reward the winner(s) with Supporter or VIP).

    edit:

Here's where I saw it before or how I am visioning it although this was for a RuneScape clan I was in.

  10. As a reminder almost anything with incentive will have the tradeoff and risk that someone will try to abuse it.  We'll have the rules in place and handle that case by case :).  I think the typical case is that the risk will be low maybe only 3-4 very "clever" people who will try to cheat.

  11. Is it possible and would you guys be interested in a type of point system?  I've seen other forums have stuff like Trophies for achievements aside from just post count and reputation.  Below is an example.  I would like to see something more rewarding than simply having a trophy though.  I think it would be a fun idea if we could have a monthly raffle for a prize like Supporter/VIP... admittedly struggling on another award for those who already have it, but I'm open to ideas or would at least like to see a soft start to something like this (maybe at the very least can choose to gift it if you already have it).

If you win a trophy that month it enters you into the raffle.  More trophies each month helps your odds.  Trophies from previous months do not enter you into future raffles, which will give new people a chance too.

    11nnxjl.png

People on that website they win trophies for all sorts of things.  Post count.  Reputation.  Featured threads.  Hosting an event.  Attending an event.  We can add all sorts of our own things like graphics contributed such as badges or banner; also contributions or milestones by developer, etc.  We can be flexible and tune it, and since it's a raffle it's not necessarily dishing out big bucks neither would it be unfair to the typical user who would want to contribute as well.

Hot take: the writing team doesn't post threads for the community since the higher ups just want to farm likes. :kappa:

    Don't tell them my secret!

I do hope to see the team grow.  I think it has a lot of potential.  Great responses and thanks for sparking the dialogue!  Sometimes all of this is just sitting in peoples heads and they have good intentions, but someone sometimes has to say something to get things rolling.

  13. With only 2 people on there (I think) I don't think it does hold a lot of weight; I also don't think the team requires heavy activity on the forums, and so they're probably not commenting on threads like these too often :(

I admit the current output isn't very transparent neither impressive.  I think in the very direct picture and current practice: You're right...  I feel like I'm not seeing much.

Personally: I have a couple of ideas.  Something I learned funny enough while in retail was to not "drop all your grenades at once" I'm treading carefully before I release new ideas.  I do have an idea for the writing team...  wouldn't sell it as the most epic idea it's probably been brought up before...  I think it's going to require a few writers hopefully acquiring a few new people from different servers and their game modes so it can be a little more diverse, but for now I think the announcement or two here or there is okay.

Just like a magician wont reveal all their secrets... might not show anyone how to levitate... but I'll spill a card or a coin trick.  I think something that would be a good idea for a writing team member is to start writing a weekly journal thread kind of like a blog within GFL.  They could blog about the community and general updates they've noticed...  have something like an opinions column...  maybe do something fun like try a new game mode every other week and write their thoughts on it.  I think that would be a lot of fun, and it wouldn't have to be anything official (quite honestly you wouldn't need writer to do it, but it would be a good excuse kind of like journalism).

Something I think our leadership should do is they should start having writer team do the community announcements more often.  This is actually not unusual at all anywhere you go.  A lot of places they will have very specific people who do the announcements instead of the CEO, Presidents or VPs doing it, and same thing for when the news talks to them.  I know at NASA the Flight Director does not talk to the astronauts; it's CAPCOM.  What's very common too is when people are in kind of high ranking positions and see what's going on behind the scenes... when they communicate... everything comes together perfectly in their head and everything is inferred when they make the announcements, but in reality people who are just members or VIP they read the announcements a lot of things seem to come out the blue or doesn't really make sense.  I think if a writer were to write and make the announcements they might actually communicate like a person so that the audience understands it a little bit better; they'll probably make it more personable compared to have some robotic-like person just making some dull announcement.

I think the quote I posted earlier really hits the spot on this topic.  I personally see the puck going somewhere where having a team like this will be very useful.

  14. I read on super unreliable Yahoo news that I read anyways, that the Weeknd got snubbed :(  I didn't feel it coming.

A lot of the people on the list I hardly know them if they aren't mainstream like Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish; I think I've heard a few Dua Lipa ones, but my girlfriend really does not like her so I don't listen lol.

  15. I've been stretching everyday.  I still cannot do the splits :( I am super inflexible.

Before the lockdown I watched very few shows.  Now I've been sucked into watching the Vampire Diaries.  I'm honestly game for Damon to hook up with Elena.  My girlfriend also got me to watch Twilight and I'm on Team Jacob, but she's Team Edward.

Some things I want to pick up again is I use to play the piano a lot.  I don't have one in my apartment.  My twin spilled it to me that I might be getting one for Christmas so that I can play again (I posted a video once of me playing The Dragster Wave its the end credits in the movie Taken..)  I'm not going to sell myself as a talented player I only knew a few basic songs.

Things like Neowise comet wants me to get a telescope and start stargazing.

I work a lot in my spare time too.  One of the projects I was working on uses a lot of LISP programming.  It's a super old language!  I can explain its reference I mostly work with chip design and Cadence is a company that makes the software that does all of that stuff.  Cadence calls it "SKILL Programming" which has it's own similar syntax, but you can use LISP too.  A lot of times you buy a software you get what you get and if the feature doesn't exist you have to do a request or find a work around.  With this programming language you can literally create your own feature and automation.  You don't like something?  Make it.  I think that's really cool so I'm super into it.

    edit:

For anyone interested in learning programming I can't help but advertised that I wrote a series of guides that are meant to practically hold your hand in C programming :) the syntax is so similar to a lot of languages, that I think you could really run off with it and try anything else later

  16. Stephen Hawkings book a brief history in time talks about some very specific "initial conditions" instead of just statistics.  I use to believe in the more statistical thing ie. even if it were just 0.00000000000000...0001% in the infinity university its infinity so it should still happen, but the more I think about these initial conditions the more I'm swayed away from the statistics.  They say the university was once infinite density meaning that it had a very tiny zero volume before the big bang, and so even though it has expanded into this large unknown out of reach to us doesn't make it seem more likely to me that there is intelligent life if it didn't have the same initial conditions as us.  This whole zero density thing if I may be recalling right is what is so attractive about the universe expanding topic...  I think Rocket was talking about forensics (on Discord) and it's kind of like a big forensics analysis if they can see how the world is expanding then they might be able to run some simulations and reverse engineer it to our origins, but what I think we'll find there is that it's possible for only us to have the just right initial conditions for our life as intelligent beings.

When I say intelligent beings I'm not meaning like "Oh we're superior and smarter than everything" but more of like we're self conscious.  I do believe and I think there may have been studies shown that some living things like bacteria are elsewhere away from Earth.

Anyhow: If I seem to be chasing my tail I am a little bit 🤪 a bit of fun.  It's a fun topic.  There was a similar thread years back about religion I do talk a little about about this stuff between two books including Hawking's Brief History in Team.  Here's the other thread if you're curious to see how twisted I am on this.

edit: Oh and please don't post there the thread is from 2017.

  17. I do have to admit I like the cards.  Would it still be difficult to have both and appeal to sentiment by moving the Shout box to the right side area for people he would like to continue using it?  So long as it's not at the top right it shouldn't distract those distressed users away from your cool looking cards; there doesn't seem to be a tradeoff or cost to doing this.  I feel like those cards no matter what you link them to I feel like the links are only going to appeal to newer users and the Shout box is really an appeal or an award for people who have been around for a while.

  18. I'll admit my bias here that my reasons are more sentiment from having it around for so long.  I think it's cool to just have a casual Shout box no need to hop to another website or login elsewhere (especially if you don't have an account); I also don't feel like it's harming or hurting the community.  I agree with you some of the other side content are (in my opinion) not as exciting for the typical forum user and so I'd rather keep the Shout box or replace those other items with the Shout box if something had to go.  A lot of communities have both a Shout box and a Discord and so I think it also helps our forums stay competitive in terms of its features.

Secondary to that: Some people do get banned on Discord.  I think if that happens then Shout box and the forums is a good pathway for them to proof good behaviour in their appeals.

  19. I agree.  I think almost any incentive will have risks associated with it that are always hard to prevent 100%.

An example is that some forums I have visited they do not allow people to post pictures.  The reason is because they are worried about the risk of people posting indecent pictures or using it for advertising; however: that would make the forums very bare and boring, and I don't see too many active forums with settings like that.  Here: We obviously allow people to post pictures and videos knowing these risks exists...  we assume the general case people will follow the rules, and if people break the rules it will be handled (hopefully not too often, which I don't think a suggestion like this would seriously increase that risk).

Holy heck yes.  I've worked for one oceanography related place and there is so much unknowns there!  I've heard that we've explored more of space than our own ocean.  Very interesting perspective.

I think the difference between intelligent life and life out there are two very different things.  I personally believe so far as intelligent life goes... I feel like the conditions for it is very difficult to achieve even if our universe was infinitely large.
