  1. Event Type: Game event/recommendation (multiple)

    Event Description:

I have a whole BUNCH of suggestions, so here we go.

I'd like to preface this by saying that I think we should stick with events for these, because they're fun, but making a 'proper server' for them wouldn't be worth it.

    [SVEN CO-OP]

Have you ever heard of "Sven Co-op"? Well, now you have. It's a (completely) free game based off of Half Life 1. It's basically 32 player co-op Half Life 1, really.

Anyway, this isn't particularly specific but more of a general 'we should do stuff on this game' for an event, but here's some things I'd suggest.

Playthrough of the original Half Life campaigns:

This would take about four to five hours for the base game campaign, and then maybe three to four hours to cover Opposing Force and Blue Shift.

Playthrough of some of the numerous mod maps:

There are a LOT of custom maps/'campaigns' out there, and there's a lot of good ones too. Here's some I recommend, along with a basic description:

    • They Hunger (3-part Horror/Action campaign. Would take maybe 2 to 3 hours to complete. Beware of the high difficulty.)
    • Black Mesa, Special Tactics Division (This one is absolutely my favourite. In brief, four teams of one to four players spend their points on 'creatures', which then fight to the death in an arena. Each team earns their points from these matches, along with intermittent mini-games that can help teams if they're lagging behind on points.)
    • Echoes (Custom campaign for Half Life, very similar to the original game.)
    • Bot Party (In brief, Mario Party built in the Half Life engine. No, I'm not joking. May not work due to bugs, so give it some testing before you use it for an event.)
    • Turret Fortress (In brief, tower defence. This requires co-op, and I have no friends, so I don't know if this actually works. Might be pretty good, if you can get it working.)
    • A whole bunch more, including quite a few included with the release version of the game.

By the way, I'd recommend putting the difficulty on higher levels, just to keep things challenging, especially if we're going for high player counts.

I'd also like to point out this game is perfect for players with potato PCs, so that's a plus. I'd also suggest playing this over multiple sessions.

    [OpenTTD]

In brief, it's a free, open source version of the original Transport Tycoon Deluxe from the 1990s. Players manage their own transport companies by making train/boat/bus/plane networks between cities/industries across the map. I won't go into too much detail with this one because it's complicated, here's a trailer to convince you a bit better:

Anyway, this is also perfect for potato PCs and lots of players, and should be great fun to play. A full match would take... five hours, maybe? So I'd suggest multiple sessions if we want to pursue this further.

Although, I would recommend a few rules:

    • No intentional shitty road/rail layouts
    • No using trains as discount missiles (because you can destroy other people's trains doing this and it's quite honestly a dick move.)

    [Freeciv]

Anyway, here's my third recommendation. Freeciv, as the name implies, is a free, open source version of the original Civilisation, so I'm sure that I don't need to explain the basics here.

This game is literally older than I am, so, again, perfect for potato PCs (yeah, yeah, I'm projecting, I know). However, I think the maximum player count is six per server, so not a lot of room for participation. I'd still strongly recommend it, though.

    [Ace of Spades/Build and Shoot]

Basically, TF2 CTF meets Minecraft. It used to be called 'Ace of Spades' until it was bought out by Jagex (the bastards) and turned into a paid game, so now there's a free, fan-made version called 'Build and Shoot'. Also, yes, I know that sort of combination of FPS and Minecraft gets a bad rap at the best of times, but it's good. It's also free, which should help convince you somewhat. Here's a trailer to convince you some more:

Again, yes, I know it looks dumb, but it's free, decent quality, and I'm sure people will enjoy it for a session or two. There's a fair few maps out there to play.

    [OpenRA]

What a surprise, it's yet another free, open source, fan remake of a game from the 1990s. If you don't know what Red Alert is, it's basically 4-player top down real-time strategy. OpenRA is actually a collection of RTS games (the original Red Alert, Tiberian Dawn, and Dune), so you're spoiled for choice, really. Here's a trailer:

Anyway, that's all the suggestions I have for now. Thanks for reading!
