[discontinued] Linux VPSes for Developers

Hello Developers!

 

Roy and I have talked about offering VPS-like servers to our developers for free for a long time now and I'm happy to announce that we're finally doing it! GFL has been in a really good position financially for a while now and with the recentish move of the main infrastructure to the new web machine, we have an extra dedicated server. Normally, we’d just cancel it after backing up everything on it, but these circumstances present us with the perfect opportunity to do something like this. We’re still in the process of removing the last few services from the machine, but it should be ready very soon! 

We’ll be using LXC containers to provide these, which means your access to certain kernel interfaces are a tad restricted, but the majority of things you’d ever want to use one of these for should still be easily possible. 

 

Currently, the following operating systems are available:

 

 - Alpine Linux

 - Debian 11

 - Ubuntu 20.04 (Recommended)

 - Fedora

 - OpenSUSE

 - Any of the other images available from https://us.images.linuxcontainers.org/

 

There are only two restrictions on what you may use these containers for: Please do not do anything illegal with the server (cyber attacks, phishing, sending out spam email, etc) and do not do anything overly CPU intensive (for instance, mining cryptocurrency, which can affect the performance of other guests on the host).

 

Initially, we're opening this up to Developers, Technical Administrators, Division Leaders, Server Managers, and Directors (note that these are primarily for developers, so they get priority over the other ranks). If you're interested in one of these, send me a DM on discord and I'll get one setup for you.

 

In the event that you leave GFL, I will give you a 30 days notice to backup any data, then I will destroy your container.

The machine has been wiped so I'm now able to fulfill requests. Contact me if you'd like one.

 

The OP has been updated with other operating systems as well as I've played around with the networking settings on the other distros and have gotten it working.
