shoutbox is pretty much entirely deprecated by our discords, it serves almost no purpose but to confuse new users, be shit posted in or be used for arguments/rageposting (this last point might not be that obvious to non-forum staff because it just gets deleted by moderators)

 

vote in the poll above on what to do about it, haha btw this is just to gather opinions it isn't a vote on what will happen

p.s. yes i know its been spoken about for a while but this time something might happen in like a week - its one of the first things that a new user will see when they visit the site because of how it is positioned, and i feel like that real estate could be better used by some prompts to sign up, appeal a ban, apply for admin, join an upcoming event, or whatever

tbh, it only ever became a popular thing when we didn’t have discord. Shoutbox was the old, like, discord #general chat. It’s hardly used anymore except by the same like 7 people who just say hi back and forth.

I really think it should be removed. It's not well utilized except for people to

 

1) Cry when they get banned / muted / demoted / whatever

2) Call for an admin that won't ever come because they're asking in the wrong place

3) "hello"

 

It's also just another IPS application that we have to install / keep up to date / fix when it breaks. We derive very little (perhaps it might even be detrimental) benefit from it and in return its a slight hassle at times when performing application upgrades on the forums.

 

The reason I voted to remove it entirely on the poll was because I've looked at (albeit briefly) Discord embeds and they just seem clunky and out of place.

I really like Shout box and in the past I would ask to please keep it.  I really would like to.

 

Lately, though, I've been seeing more often what Aurora described, and I'm agreeing that the cons are beginning to outweigh the earlier benefits and sentiments.

not all activity is good activity or activity we want - we do not want people in shoutbox for basically any reason; for every use case discord, form or forum topic is preferred
