Youtube service update

Recommended Posts

Apparently Google's said that they were about breaking even on Youtube with some people thinking that they're in fact losing money on Youtube.

If they wish to make it more "advertiser friendly" so they can start making money back to run it, then so be it. What Youtube should have done is be more transparent about the changes.

Also, anyone bitching about "censorship" is honestly thinking about this wrong. It's not censorship. They're still allowing SJWs to be SJWs and they're letting anti-SJWs be anti-SJWs. No one's being censored. Censorship on the internet's like the boy who cried wolf. Eventually when the wolf comes around, no one's going to care. So people should really stop calling everything "censorship". This isn't an issue about censorship. It's an issue about large corporations not being transparent with their users.

I think people have honestly gotten spoiled by Youtube which is why they're acting the way they're acting right now. Back in the day, Youtube didn't pay people for making videos. The purpose of Youtube is to upload videos. Being paid to make videos is something secondary. The way they're currently going about enforcing the guidelines are pretty absurd. I saw an article that said that the majority of demonetization strikes that are contested are overturned since they don't actually break guideline rules. Currently it's the automated system that's really messing things up since one of the things it does is use tags to determine what to block and not block. The problem is that sometimes those tags make sense and are appropriate with context so the flagging system incorrectly identifies it.

Anyway, jumping ship to another site will just bring us back to where we are now in a few years. It costs millions to keep youtube up and it struggles to get the money back due to the fact that no one watches ads anymore and no one signed up for Youtube red.

What youtube really should do, though, is allow users to support their favorite youtubers directly instead of having to go to a 3rd party website to donate to them. Ultimately, either advertisers are going to pay for the youtubers to make their content or the users are going to have to. Someone's gotta pay.

The new system is a lot more strict and i think it's honestly for the best.

My only problem with it ( and the main reason I myself am against it), is that a lot of full time youtubers are really getting fucked over.

And are considering quitting do to this.

They were already getting fucked over. Youtube's just now telling you: "Btw, we haven't been giving you money on this video".

If they're getting fucked over now then they were being fucked over a while ago.

All i will say is that if YouTube wants to make a family friendly place then make an app or some option to beep it out without hurting everyone, And no swearing on youtube.... *you hear an explosion in the distance* .

I say fuck it and if youtube fucks everyone over we can all just move to pornhub or something.

I believe their swearing thing only applies if you're swearing for the sake of being shocking/offensive.

So if you're an entertainment channel and you say "FUCK!" for comedy effect then they don't care. Like I said above, the problem is lack of communication and terrible enforcement of their current policies. It's not individual people that's demonetizing videos. It's just some bot that's doing it. Not sure how exactly it's doing it beyond checking tags.

TBH, this is not fun. What YouTube is doing is trying to pull Valve. Since Valve doesn't listen to their community anymore, I doubt YouTube will listen to their community after this crappy changes they made.

I started liking YouTube more since they improved audio captioning.

Google has released stats that about 45% of users who use Youtube do not use adblock so I would say that's way more then nobody watching ads and if you skip or watch a full ad it makes no difference in the amount of revenue in generates.

And the feature you suggested has already existed for around two years https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6066530?hl=en

EDIT: Figured I would throw in my personal favorite coverage of all this so far

IMO Youtube trying to make content friendly for everyone is terrible. They're expecting content creators to keep their video "appropriate" for the advertisers to advertise on.

Why are they trying to make it so all videos have to be basically family friendly? What parent in the right mind would let a 4 year old go on the INTERNET without supervision? There's no need to monetize videos for many things that may be considered inappropriate. If a child happens to stumble upon a video he shouldn't be seeing (such as videos with swearing), it should NOT be the content creator's fault that they made a video that probably wasn't directed towards children and maybe the child will learn not to fuck around with the internet.

Other than the rules that have to do with being appropriate or not, there are some rules that are just stupid. For starters, theres the "no controversial topic". WHY? Are you afraid to let your viewer get views and share their opinions? The point of youtube is to upload whatever you wish to. You're going to de-monetize and age restrict videos for talking about controversial topics? That's stupid. Do you age restrict the news and restrict their pay for showing controversial topics? NO. YOU DON'T.

All in all, I understand that there's limited amount of money that youtube can give out, but to be douchebags to the people who make them money and not be so vague to them is flat out wrong. There are some rules that make sense such as the drug promotion and showing bare-naked skin. Seriously though, youtube has to stop pulling a Valve-like communication and start opening up to people more like Blizzard.

45% is still a minority. They could double their ad revenue and then some if people stopped using adblock.

And as for the fan funding thing, that's interesting. I thought I had seen it before on some channel's but couldn't remember it too much.

Anyway, I disliked Philip DeFranco's first video since it seemed really clickbaity with the title and all that. But this one's much better. I just found it odd that he was saying that youtube was shutting down his channel due to monetary issues when it doesn't seem like his channel's one of the high production cost ones like Vsauce, Kurzgesasgt, etc.

Youtube wasn't meant to be a job.

some other jobs were never meant to be a job, a lot of the jobs we have today deprived from our basic needs(yes I do know that more jobs came as society advanced in the technological means) weren't meant to be jobs, but eventually as times passed they became jobs, for example chefs and farmers and etc...(not the best analogy but you get where I go at).

And I disagree with Major Push's opinion as well, from what I understand most of the times when people call Youtube's new policies to be censorship, are not because they block both sides(although I would love the idea if someone would check it ) but because they silence people who say "fuck" and nonsense like that.

All I think is that Youtube as a company are morons(not including those who didn't have a word on the retarded decisions), if youshit wants to become more family friendly they should make a new website/app for it, or even an option in the current site to be safe for kids and etc...

And needless to speak about the responsibility of the shitty parents that don't keep guard of their kids on the internet and just let them be there without any restrictions as if making their kids zombies of the internet at young age serves them as some sort of a cheap nanny and doesn't make them deal with kid's needs..

Youtube should have the standard rules, no violence, no rape, no nudity, no porn or CP allowed, maybe something I forgot but basically those should sum it up.

No restrictions on the rest...

I would actually give up on the violence part as well, no reason why people can't see the honest truth of what happens in the world just because of careless parents or other pricks that for some reason decided to watch it when they know they can't.

If not most of the videos I watch, I would move on to different sites like LiveLeak that are more interesting.

Well youtube already had a "family friendly" fail safe when they made the warnings for restricted content. It used to be you had to have an account to prove you were 18+ to view explicit material, now it's just a "are you sure you want to see this?" button that you don't even need to have an account to see.
