Happy 10 Year Anniversary To GFL!!!

Hey everyone,

 

I just wanted to announce today represents GFL's 10 year anniversary (January 25th, 2011 is when it was founded)! I didn't have any long post planned for this and wanted to keep it short so we could celebrate instead 🙂 

 

It is truly crazy to believe that 10 years ago I was on the Steam group creation page thinking about random names for a new community and somehow thought of GFL (our Steam group was the first thing I made in GFL which is why I use the date on the Steam group to indicate how old it is). With that said, it's funny to think we started off with a CS:S Zombie Escape server running my cringe-worthy maps on my super old home server at the time followed by a CS:S Surf RPG DM server (the oldest server GFL has to date) and two TF2 servers. This was basically our CS:S ZE server ~10 years ago:

 

 

It has definitely been a long ride since then!

 

I wanted to thank all of our players and staff for making this possible and here's to another year!

Through all the bad and good times GFL want though, you're always updating and improving GFL and I'm so glad that I'm a part of this community. Not everything is perfect but it's sure is a 99.7% 😊

This is a big milestone for GFL and I'm very happy to see it alive and well after all this time. After seeing this, I decided to go back and reflect on the time I spent here. Although I spent 4 years here, less than half of GFL's current lifespan, I think it's very hard to overestimate how much of an impact this community had on me fundamentally. 

 

Honestly, I never want to forget my experiences here. I might have to buy a piece of merch or something even though I'm but a lurker now. I'm almost getting tears in my eyes right now even though this is such a celebratory moment because fuck nostalgia. I know a story of my life post is probably the thing people least want to see right now but I really feel like writing down a lot of my experiences here so I might have to just do that even if it falls away to the sands of time. 

 

This is a wonderful community and I'm sure its 10 years have been filled with ups and downs but I just want to remind everybody that the biggest thing that made these past 10 years worth remembering are the memories we shared with other players, as a community and as a family. I wouldn't have had such a connection with GFL, had it not been for the probably hundreds of people that I met along the way, both good and bad. 

 

And with all that said, happy 10 years to the community, to its servers, events, and teams, for being the entertainment that brought us here, to ALL of its dedicated staff, roles big and small, for keeping the wheels turning, to all the forum and discord contributors, for keeping us connected and sharing great ideas and helpful feedback, and most importantly, to each other, without whom none of us would have any reason to stay.

wow, that's actually pretty inspiring

sometimes it's hard to think that most things always start small, but this place has really been here for so long that I find it pretty hard to believe

To be honest, I've always been a fan of knockback on non-level maps. I loved playing with chaos on our old CS:S ZE server on bigger open maps with failnades, etc. haha.
