Desktop building help

Build the PC that I gave to you. Just change out the Ryzen series and motherboard to a to an Intel variant. Look at an I7 6700 or an I7700, depending on your budget (unless you want to play with Ryzen)

You all are forgetting Intels 8th gen series. You can get a 6C/6T i5 8600k 3.6GHz - 4.3GHz cheaper than a 6th/7th gen I7 with better or equal performance.
While you save $100 on the CPU, you can utilize it to purchase a better Graphics card/buy an M.2 SSD.

Back to the CPU, obviously a CPU as beefy that supports OC'ing requires a rather good cooler. I would suggest with a closed loop cooling system.
Which, once more, you would need a Z370 Chipset MOBO that has a really good OC'ing ability.
For this, I will be choosing the MSI Z370 GAMING PLUS.

So far we have the following:
CPU i5 8600k

RAM G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory

MOTHERBOARD MSI - Z370 GAMING PLUS ATX LGA1151

CPU COOLER Corsair - H100i v2 70.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler

I will be explaining in more detail why I chose each of these components.

CPU: as I mentioned above, intel did really step up the game with the 8th generation CPU's.

The i5 8600k, is a mid-tier CPU, socket LGA 1151, with a base Frequency of 3.6GHz. (higher is better, but also more power consuming).
It has a boost clock of up to 4.3GHz, but you can obtain even higher clock speed when messing around with overclocking.
It has 6 Cores, 6 Threads, features some impressive 9MB of Cache, 14nm litography and finally, with a mere 95 W of power consumption.
It is a very solid bang for the buck, you can find these at under $300, but above $250.

RAM: G.Skill - Ripjaws V is the same brand that I use, and, personally they NEVER let me down. Really solid ram, at 3000MHz which will have amazing flow with your 8th gen CPU. I selected 2 sticks of 8GB each, allowing for more expansion space in your motherboard.

Motherboard: MSI Z370 GAMING PLUS ATX - I chose this motherboard, out of the many out there, because first of all, the 8th gen CPU's only support the Z370 chipset (for now), and it is really good looking. Here are some of its features:

First of all, the most recent and newer graphic cards are REALLY Heavy, which means you need a sturdy Motherboard with a sturdy PCI-e Slot that can hold it. This motherboard features a steel encaged PCI-e slot 12LC9C3.png

preventing the issue mentioned above. 1 Gigabit Ethernet!

It has 4 DIMM Ram slots and allows up to 64GB of RAM up to 4000MHz (OC).

Overall it is a very stable overclocker with some really good heatsinks to make sure you have the best performance at the most important moments while you game or work.

CPU COOLER: This one was pretty straightforward. Corsair is a brand that is really well known for making outstanding coolers, and, since we're going for a CPU with a high Core clock with possibility of Overclocking, we want something that assures our Processor runs without any thermal throttling. For all these reasons, I present you the Corsair H110i v2.

Overall recommendations:

When choosing a case, if you go for this build, make sure you select an ATX case that supports a 240mm radiator from your CPU Cooler. This also goes with the graphics card, be REALLY aware of the dimensions.

Regarding the PSU, anything above 500W gold certified should do the trick. These go around ~$100. You can always go for a modular PSU and purchase some cables off Cablemod https://cablemod.com/ (these are rather expensive, lol)

Have fun building it!

I have built my own computer and I am really proud of it. I hope you get the same satisfaction feeling when building yours.

Forgot to mention, all these go under $700 which means you have more than half to spend on the rest of the computer!

After falling for the Alienware scam (their support is far worse than their computers) I've learned several things that are essential for a good desktop.

1) CD Drives, I cheaped out on them and now I'm sad that i can't throw Das Boat into my computer and watch it on a awesome monitor

2) SSDs are a much needed part, my friend has a 8 GB SSD and it takes him a few seconds to load into a game of Civilizaton, I have no SSD and it takes me two minutes

3) The GTX 1070/1080 are worth it, especially if you get the founders edition, they look lit af

4) Liquid cooling is lit

5) 1 TB of space is not enough.

6) Powerful processor + powerful graphics card = Max graphics on everything

Okay I am trying to decide between the 1070ti or the normal 1080.

Looking at reviews the difference between the two isn't massive. However, the price is.

Can anyone help reason one side or the other?

@Darkling before you go choosing let's look at some charts.

Before taking any decision that will haunt you for long periods, remember to look at the facts.

First of all, let's look at the 1080 and 1070ti, and respective specs.

You look at it, and think, but hold on, there isn't much of a difference in between these! Core clock remains the same.. Boost Clock is a mere 50Hz higher.. same bus width, only 2GHz extra memory speed, etc etc..
But hold on, Look at the memory type.
First of all, what is, VRAM?
VRAM is the equivalent of the RAM for your GPU, to the GPU!

And there is A LOT of improvements in it, from GDDR5 to GDDR5X.

From my personal point of view, I would go for the 1080, but then again, the money is yours.

From what I have heard they are pretty much the same so go with the cheaper one.

Thoughts on the current build?

I thought about getting a 1080 but I just couldn't bring myself to spend the extra £200. Maybe if the 1080 is discounted further on black Friday then I will swap this out for it.

Again depending on every single parts discount I may swap it for something else of similar or higher spec.

Only thing I'd do is swap i7 for an i5 8th gen. :P

  • 2 months later...

Something a lot of people don't do is look at builds in the case they pick. When selecting a case, look up some videos on it to get an idea of how it is to build in the case, how you will have to cable manage, etc...
