Expanding Horizons Within the Community

Hey guys.

 

I've been working a lot with Murder recently and I've come across something I rather don't want to face: I feel that Murder, Deathrun, and even a lot of other gamemodes have become isolated from the community. The admins and regulars do not seem to join the rest of the community in the forums. Murder forms its own community, therefore not bringing too much to GFL itself. Sadly, the dedication of the regulars is not something we ourselves can alter, for better or for worse.

 

The smaller servers have only their dedicated band of regulars to hope to keep bringing back to their servers. And then real life steps in the way. I've been with Murder for a year now, and I've seen many, MANY regulars come and go. Yet Murder does not seem to increase in any way, shape or form, without specific updates, which only bring back regulars that hear about them via Murder staff. To be quite clear:

 

I feel that Murder, Deathrun, and other various gamemodes amongst different games and servers are being IGNORED by the rest of the community THAT NEVER PLAYED IT TO BEGIN WITH.

 

So I'm here asking everybody that is willing to expand their horizons some. Sure, some of the bigger servers take time away, but I feel that the less successful servers, despite the amount of effort being put in by the Manager, are becoming, to be quite blunt, isolated. Murder, I have NOT ONCE in the past couple of months seen a higher-up (Yes higher-ups, this is for you too.) come voluntarily to Murder. Note the word VOLUNTARILY. I have invited higher-ups on multiple occasions and seemingly only then have they realized that "OH YEAH, Murder exists." What's going to be next to die? What other dedicated Manager(s) are going to end up feeling the same way as myself? Purge? CS:GO Zombie Escape? See, I know that at some point, despite the amount of effort and dedication put in by @ButterKing5000 and @xSnowyAngel, their servers will decline as mine has. Also as Deathrun has (No manager to mention at the moment).

 

And even I have tried to expand my own horizons. No offense towards @ButterKing5000, but I have never really enjoyed playing The Purge. Also, no offense towards @Violator but TTT has never really been my thing either.

 

And I've gone there and tried them out anyway.  I have put time and effort into trying to play, learn, and understand these gamemodes, despite my disliking of them. The only servers that seem to attract members of the community who started out from other servers are newly released servers, and/or gamemodes they knew/played prior to GFL.

 

And I would like to ask the rest of the community to do the same. As I mentioned earlier, almost nobody's trying anything new. On occasion, when I have run short on admins, I have posted a thread (two, actually) inviting admins from other servers to come help a fellow Admin/Manager out. And I need to give credit to those that did it. @Nap14hockey, @Flooooooooooooooooooooooof, @Squanchy, @Xy_, @JK_Ghosty and @John_Ariana_Man, you all are great examples of my point. I don't believe any/some of you would have EVER touched Murder if I hadn't invited you to do so. You all expanded your horizons within GFL, exposing yourselves to gamemodes you may have not known you liked (or disliked).

 

So I've rambled quite enough here. I have a request for you all.

 

I would like to see everybody, everybody who is willing, join a new server and put forth some effort into learning/becoming a part of a gamemode/server they never thought they would.

 

I do not care if it is within the same Division. I do not care if it isn't Murder or one of the servers I myself administrate.

 

The point of this is to help out the gamemodes that aren't doing so hot. TTT, Purge, etc. all have admins that don't play any other server. Expand your horizons, and I'm 99 percent sure that there is another server this community has to offer that you will enjoy.

 

I would like to see some diversity in our members. In the servers they play. All the big servers isolate the small ones, which die out eventually.

 

Expand your horizons. The servers are what hold this community together. The big ones and the small ones.

I don't think some of you realize that. If I did I wouldn't bother making this post.

 

If you can, please leave a comment telling which server you'll expand to. Participation will lead others to follow in your footsteps. I've seen it happen.

 

EDIT: As I stated in a lower post, this is optional. I'm notnin any way, shape or form trying to force people to. Notice the word "willing."

I see the point in making a thread like this, as we obviously want to boost up our servers that are not doing so well as other, but I don't see this really being too 'logical' if you will. Admins that have the time and energy to try out new things will do it. Other won't. For my case specifically, I dedicate the majority of my time to Purge, even before I was a manager. Why? Because I love the gamemode, and I love what I do. I have ventured and play on other servers occasionally (Breach, ZE, etc). Because I put so much of my time and energy into what I enjoy. (If you check all my steam names on gametracker, you will find I am also nearing 2k hours if I have not already reached it) Thus, I often do not have the energy/will-power to do a lot of other things like play on (or try out) our other servers. Instead I play different games with my close friends as a means of relaxing. Something like this may sound silly to some of you all that administrate on 'easier' servers, but if you spend a few hours on Purge on a good day, you will know what I mean.

 

What I listed above happens to be the case for many of the Purge admins. (I cannot really speak for other servers) My current admins that don't play on other servers are usually the ones who tend to be on the lower end of the activity scale (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), meaning they don't have as much time in general for such things, compared to others. I for one, also push my team to be active as much as possible (mainly because we are currently low on admins).

 

Lastly, some gamemodes are simply not for everyone. How do we know this? Well GFL isn't the only community most of us have been involved in or at least visited. I have tried out a lot of the gamemodes GFL has to offer and some of them may or may not have been on GFL at all. Sure you could argue servers are different, but when it comes down to it, they are the same gamemode and usually offer the same things. I for one absolutely hate the gamemode TTT (obviously no offense to Violator or any other TTT related players), I just simply do not find fun in the gamemode. I have tried murder before as well and it was more or less the same. I understand you are not trying to force anyone to try out new gamemodes, but for people like myself that already know what they enjoy, we will more than likely not do this. I would love to say I would, but it simply will more than likely not happen in the case of myself.

It's very risky for "higher ups" to join other game modes.

 

Your message means well, but it's overlooking a safer, sustainable, and more effective alternative:  Corresponding leadership should be working on attracting their players to the forums and working on community orientation.  These players visiting the forums will give your game mode personality, building friendships and connections, and will increase the probability of cross-talk between them.

To be honest I wouldn't mind joining and trying other game modes, it's just that I'd like to move up in rank and help out around here more. I'm a very passionate guy when it comes to communities and I love helping them grow. If what you say is true I wouldn't mind jumping on those servers it's just that I don't wanna stay in a position where I can't help others who make these servers possible succeed in having a safe and fun environment. If you wouldn't mind messaging me over steam or here about what you'd think I could do specifically to help then go right ahead. I'm all ears lol.

While this is a good idea, I feel that we need to be more worried about new people joining rather than regulars who come back. Because, I know this may sound bad, but a lot of the "Regulars" don't end up staying. However, it is still important to maintain having some regulars as well, because it helps make the servers look good when people continue to come back and be like "I love this server" but in order for the server to not die we need a high flow of traffic from new people, who can later become regulars, and in turn, the high traffic causes more people to join because the server is ranked higher up. However, I know for a fact both me and you are not quite sure how to do that, and we have been struggling with it for a while. So, I believe some advice or help getting NEW people to join would be more beneficial.

Well, as requested I'll add my servers xD

 

I started out on CS:GO Surf RPG EU then I got introduced to CS:GO JB, all of sudden someone told me to get GMOD and so I did... I helped out on GMOD JB, joined in on TTT, purge and breach. Recently I expanded myself into CS:GO DR since it was going to start up again and I've also tried out various other mods on CS:GO such as the US RPG, Bhop and Surf timer. I've even played ZE and ZM or whatever you guys call them. This reminds me I've also played some zombie stuff on GMOD, but TBH I suck at GMOD yet I try :-D

 

I think it's good to give attention to minor servers but bringing population from the small ones to the big ones isn't a good idea :-)

I very much agree with this (since my servers dying) but like butter said, some people just don't find the other gamemodes fun, and we cant force people to play what they don't wanna play.

Higher ups neglecting other servers has been a problem for years now. I thought to myself that DLs would solve that, but apperantly not. I'm not one to judge, but what the fuck are DLS doing as DLs if not taking care of their ENTIRE divisions? 

 

I stopped expecting from council to look out for servers years ago. It's been this way since 2013ish.

I would like to add that this is an optional request, not an order or a command.

 

This is for those that are willing. Butter, Eli and Joshy, you all brought up very good points. I understand not everyone will be doing this. This is just a little motivation to help the servers that need it.

Don't get me wrong. I love what you're trying to do. Personally I play on 5 GFL servers. Purge, Jb, Dr, more recently CSS surf RPG, and breach. I really enjoy all those game modes but servers like TTT I would love to play more but I can't  stand the minecraft map, but there are other servers I can and am willing to try, like more csgo servers, and (if I cann ever figure out how to join ) the arma server

i've been on gfl for almost 2 years, admin on TTT for a year and a half, during all these time, i only saw one higher up joining TTT, and it was cypher while he was a director, I know that other admins from gmod sometimes hop there. Both times you posted your post asking for admins from other sections to join I wish I could've helped, but TTT burns all my energies on being admin, I had to resign from breach because I had no spare time to do all the tasks I was expected to do, murder is a fun game mode, the only time I played there all online players were nice and respectful (it was a shock for me, since I was dealing with a 40/42 TTT server as the only admin), might try again once my tests are over

From what I'm getting from this, is Winter is encouraging people to play on other servers and try out new things. I do agree but I already love murder so I'm not leaving the server behind no matter what ;P

While this is the dedication I love to see, I'm not saying you have to leave the server behind.

 

In fact- if you had to leave the server behind to go somewhere else, I wouldn't go anywhere else. I'm staying with Murder, kek.

 

I like your dedication though.
